"We had a fantastic day. David was very knowledgeable and kind. We learned a lot about the island’s history and geology. The sites were beautiful—we especially loved the sea arches and lava tube. We would highly recommend this tour!"

The van collects you from a listed Kona hotel or meeting point between about 7:45 and 8:15 am. Staying in Waikoloa? Book the Waikoloa version of the same tour, with pickups from 6:50 am.
Coffee country and the Kaʻū coast

Hour by Hour
A Day on the Volcano Adventure from Kona
The surprise in an 11-hour volcano day is how it divides: about four hours at Kīlauea, and most of the rest on the road, because the park is about 95 miles from Kona. Hawaii Geo Tours drives south along the coast in the morning and comes home the other way round the island, through Hilo and over Saddle Road, so the ride home covers new ground.
- Kona pickup, from 7:45 a.m. — The van starts at Kona Village and the Four Seasons at 7:45 and works south through Kailua-Kona to Keauhou Shopping Center at about 8:15. You get a text the day before confirming your time, and the tour needs at least six guests to run.
- Kona coffee farm, about 1 hour — A tasting and tour at a 100% Kona coffee farm, which means every bean was grown in the Kona district.
- Kaʻū coast, about 45 minutes — The listing names Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, but the county park there has been closed since 29 August 2026, so the guide chooses the black-sand stop on the day. If honu (green sea turtles) are on the shore, stay at least 10 feet away.
- About four hours in the park — The park leg starts with lunch of your choice at the Rim Restaurant in Volcano House, above the caldera, then the guide leads the summit overlooks, the crater road and a lava tube. Lava and glow are never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026 the eruption is paused between episodes.
- Hilo and Big Island Candies, about 1 hour — A drive through Hilo town and a 30-minute stop at Big Island Candies, which makes its cookies and chocolates by hand.
- Saddle Road home, about 90 minutes — Route 200 crosses the island between Maunakea and Mauna Loa, past young lava flows, climbing to about 6,632 feet before it drops back to the Kona side. You are back at your hotel about 11 hours after pickup.

Where to Stay
Where to Stay for a Kona Volcano Tour
Most volcano tours collect from hotels in Kailua-Kona, Keauhou and the Kohala Coast resorts, so book a room on your tour's pickup list.
Kailua-Kona and Aliʻi Drive
Covered by every hotel-pickup volcano tour on this site, with restaurants and Kailua Pier on foot. The Geo Tours van collects here from about 7:50 a.m.
- Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel · Beachfront by Kailua Pier, a 2-minute walk; pool, hot tub, spa and a 24-hour front desk.
- Royal Kona Resort · On Aliʻi Drive with oceanfront rooms, a pool, spa, Don the Beachcomber restaurant and a 24-hour desk.
- PACIFIC 19 Kona · Palani Road, 2 minutes on foot to Kailua Pier; pool, firepit, cafe and a 24-hour front desk.
- All stays in Kailua-Kona
Keauhou
About 5 to 7 miles south of town, already on the Highway 11 route to the park, so the Geo Tours van gets here last, at 8:15 a.m. Quieter, with fewer places to walk to.
- OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa · Oceanfront at Keauhou Bay with a pool, two hot tubs, a spa, two restaurants and a 24-hour gym.
- Kanaloa at Kona by OUTRIGGER · Waterfront condos with kitchens and washer-dryers, a pool and hot tub, next to a golf course.
- All stays in Keauhou
Waikoloa and Mauna Lani
Beach resorts north of the airport. Most tours collect here, some under a separate Waikoloa listing, and the day starts earlier and runs longer.
- Hilton Waikoloa Village · Large resort with 8 restaurants, a pool and a spa; ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach is a 5-minute walk.
- Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa · A 5-minute walk to Queens' Marketplace and 7 to ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach; pool, spa and a 24-hour gym.
- Fairmont Orchid · On a private beach with a snorkeling bay, 5 restaurants and the Spa Without Walls.
- All stays in Waikoloa

Picking a Volcano Tour from Kona
Time in the park, pickup areas, day or after dark, and what the eruption is doing right now.
Most visitors staying in Kona should book the Volcano Adventure with a Geologist. Hawaii Geo Tours collects you from a Kona hotel, spends about four hours inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park with lunch at the crater rim, and charges from $259 per person. If you want to be at Kīlauea as the light fades, take Wasabi’s Twilight Volcano & Stargazing tour instead. If you would rather add waterfalls and a coffee farm, the Volcanoes, Waterfalls & Coffee Farm Day-Trip loops the whole island. The comparison table above sets the three side by side.
Compare time in the park, not tour length
Every volcano tour from Kona is a long day, because the park sits about 95 miles away on Highway 11, two to two and a half hours each way. Total length tells you very little. An 11-hour circle-island tour and an 11-hour park-focused tour spend very different parts of that day at the volcano, and the operators’ own itineraries show the split.
| Tour | Total length | Time in the park (operator itinerary) | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volcano Adventure with a Geologist | 11 hours | About 4 hours, lunch included | $259 per person |
| Twilight Volcano & Stargazing | 12 hours | About 3 hours, plus a lava-tube walk | $309 per person |
| Big Island Highlights | 11 hours | About 90 minutes | $299 per person |
| Volcanoes, Waterfalls & Coffee Farm | 11 hours | About 80–90 minutes, plus a lava-tube walk | $276 per person |
| Volcanoes National Park Experience | 11 hours | About 2 hours | $139 per person |
If the volcano is the reason for the trip, choose a park-focused day; our Volcanoes National Park tours page compares them by their hours at Kīlauea. If you have one day for the whole island, a circle-island loop trades crater time for Rainbow Falls, ʻAkaka Falls and the Waipiʻo Valley lookout, and the circle-island tours page sets those out.
Pick by your situation
On a first visit with one volcano day, the geologist-led day is the default. Ages 6 and up can join, and lunch is at the Rim Restaurant in Volcano House, above the caldera (our review).
To stay after dark, the Wasabi twilight tour picks up between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., includes a picnic lunch and a restaurant dinner, and ends with stargazing at a dark spot chosen by the guide. The listing mentions no telescope, so expect naked-eye viewing (our review). The night tours page adds KapohoKine’s Evening Volcano Explorer, and day vs night weighs the trade-off.
For a family or a private party, the Private VIP Volcano Adventure is priced per group, from $2,385 for one or two guests to $3,721 for 12 to 14. See the private tours page and the families guide, which covers minimum ages and the long hours in a van.
For a helicopter, Blue Hawaiian’s Big Island Spectacular leaves the Waikoloa heliport, not Kona, and Rainbow’s Kīlauea eruption flight leaves Kona airport. Under the park’s air tour plan, all three permitted routes avoid the Kīlauea summit, so no flight hovers over the erupting crater. The helicopter page explains what each route covers.
On a budget, the Volcanoes National Park Experience is the lowest-priced tour on this site at $139 per person, with about two hours in the park and up to 22 guests. Driving yourself costs the $30 vehicle fee plus fuel; self-drive vs guided and the prices page do the sums.
From the Kohala resorts, book the Waikoloa listing of the same Hawaii Geo Tours day, with pickups from 6:50 a.m. From Waikoloa the park is about 120 to 125 miles via Highway 11, or about 93 to 95 via Saddle Road and Hilo, so the Waikoloa page matters more to you than the Kona mileage.

The journey from Kona
The usual route runs south on Highway 11 through the Kona coffee belt, then across the dry Kaʻū district past Ocean View, Nāʻālehu and Pāhala, and enters the park from the west. The summit sits at about 4,000 feet, 12 to 15 degrees cooler than the coast, and averages about 104 inches of rain a year against Kona’s 13. Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket even on a sunny Kona morning; the what to wear guide has the list. Several tours return the other way, through Hilo and over Saddle Road, which takes about as long. The Kona to the park page covers the drive in detail.
Inside the park, the Kīlauea Visitor Center has been closed for renovation since February 2025, and a temporary Welcome Center runs at Kilauea Military Camp. Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) reopened in August 2026 with a new entrance bridge; the lava tube guide lists which tours walk it.
Where the tours pick you up
Hotel pickup is the norm, but the lists differ. Hawaii Geo Tours’ Kona listing collects from Kona hotels between 7:45 and about 8:15 a.m., from Kona Village and the Courtyard King Kamehameha’s to the Royal Kona Resort and Keauhou Shopping Center, and asks vacation-rental guests to call. Wasabi’s twilight tour serves major hotels on both the Kona and Kohala coasts and sends rental guests to the nearest hotel. The circle-island day lists 19 hotel options across Kona and the Kohala Coast. Hawaii Forest & Trail’s Volcano, Chocolate & Waterfalls meets at a Kona start point with no hotel pickup.
Lava, closures and the black-sand stop
As of 23 October 2026, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the summit eruption, which began on 23 December 2024, is paused after Episode 55 on 17 October. HVO’s preliminary window for Episode 56 is 29 October to 5 November, and it notes the forecast is uncertain. Episodes last hours and pauses run days to weeks; the gap before Episode 55 was 53 days. No tour can promise lava or glow, and fog or rain can hide the crater. Check the USGS Kīlauea page and the NPS alerts the day before, and read lava viewing from Kona for what each phase looks like.
Many listings still name Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach as a stop. The county beach park has been closed since 29 August 2026, when the county’s lease ended, so operators are adjusting their routes. Check your voucher or ask the operator where the black-sand stop will be; the black-sand beach tours page tracks the change.
Every tour here offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before (48 hours on the Rainbow helicopter flight), and booking happens on Viator or GetYourGuide.

Kona Volcano Tour Questions
Short answers on reaching Kīlauea from Kona, what you will see and which tour to book.
Yes. Kīlauea sits inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the island's southeast side. The park is normally open 24 hours, and a private vehicle pays $30 for seven days. From Kona it is about 95 miles on Highway 11, so most visitors either drive two to two and a half hours each way or book a guided day with hotel pickup. Read Kona to the park for the drive.
There are two ways: a guided tour or a rental car. Tours collect you from your hotel, include lunch and take the four to five hours of round-trip driving off your hands; the park-focused ones spend up to about four hours at Kīlauea. Driving yourself costs the $30 park fee plus fuel and gives you your own schedule, but the drive home is long. Compare both in self-drive vs guided.
From Kailua-Kona, take Highway 11 south for about 95 miles through the coffee belt and the Kaʻū district; the National Park Service puts it at two to two and a half hours. The other way runs over Saddle Road to Hilo, then 30 miles southwest on Highway 11, about 103 miles in all. From Waikoloa, Saddle Road is the shorter route. See the one-day itinerary.
Kīlauea is on the southeast side of Hawaiʻi Island, inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, with its summit at about 4,000 feet. The current eruption is in Halemaʻumaʻu, a crater within the summit caldera. That puts it about 30 miles from Hilo and about 95 miles from Kailua-Kona, on the far side of the island from the Kona and Kohala resorts. See Kona vs Hilo tours.
Start at the summit overlooks around the caldera, such as Uēkahuna and Kīlauea Overlook, then walk Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) and drive Chain of Craters Road toward the sea. Lava shows only during eruptive episodes, which last hours, and as of 23 October 2026 the eruption is paused. A guide adds the geology and does the driving. See the park-focused tours.
For most Kona visitors, a park-focused guided day with hotel pickup, such as Hawaii Geo Tours' Volcano Adventure with about four hours in the park. To be at the crater as the light fades, a twilight tour that stays into the evening. For the island from the air, a helicopter, though park rules keep air tours off the erupting summit. Weigh the timing in day vs night tours.
Go to the summit area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The park names Uēkahuna, Kīlauea Overlook at Kūkamāhuākea (Steam Vents), Kūpinaʻi Pali and Keanakākoʻi as eruption viewing areas, and Crater Rim Drive West usually has more parking. Overlooks can close after fountaining because of ash, so check the park's alerts on the day. More in lava viewing from Kona.
You can always see the Kīlauea caldera, steam vents and old lava flows, but not always lava. As of 23 October 2026, USGS reports the eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, with a preliminary window of 29 October to 5 November for the next episode, which the observatory calls uncertain. No tour can guarantee lava or glow. See the best time guide.
Follow the USGS Kīlauea updates. The summit erupts in short fountaining episodes, usually under 12 hours, separated by pauses of days to weeks; the gap before Episode 55 was 53 days. When an episode is forecast, a tour that stays in the park into the evening gives the best chance of seeing glow, but cloud or rain can still hide it. Compare the night tours.
Book the Volcano Adventure with a Geologist (from $259 per person, about four hours in the park, Kona hotel pickup) if the volcano is the point of the day. Choose the Twilight Volcano & Stargazing tour (from $309, 12 hours, lunch and dinner) to stay into the evening, or the Wasabi circle-island day (from $276) to add waterfalls. See the best tours by visitor type.
