"We had a fantastic day. David was very knowledgeable and kind. We learned a lot about the island’s history and geology. The sites were beautiful—we especially loved the sea arches and lava tube. We would highly recommend this tour!"

How the Top Pick's Day Runs
Early Kona pickup, the Kaʻū coast, four hours in the park and Saddle Road home.
Kona hotel pickup
Pickups run from about 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. at listed Kona hotels, Keauhou Shopping Center and a Target lot. A text the day before confirms your time. Waikoloa and Kohala guests book the separate Waikoloa listing of the same day.
Coffee and the coast

Four hours in the park
Lunch of your choice at The Rim in Volcano House, overlooking the caldera, then the park and Chain of Craters Road from the summit to the sea, with a lava tube on the way.
Hilo and Saddle Road

The ranking
Eight Picks for Eight Kinds of Traveler
Each winner earned its place on park time, pickup, group size, price or reviews.
For most visitors the best volcano tour from Kona is Hawaii Geo Tours’ Volcano National Park Adventure: about four hours inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Kona hotel pickup, no more than 14 guests and a 4.9 rating from 355 Viator reviews, from $259 per person. Other travelers will do better with a different day, so the ranking below matches eight picks to eight kinds of traveler, each one earned on the figures the listings state.
How we ranked them
Each tour was judged on five things: the minutes its operator’s itinerary gives the park, where it picks up, how many guests it takes, what the price includes, and how many reviewers back its rating. A day that visits six stops with 90 minutes at the volcano is a different product from a day built around the park, so the two never compete for the same slot. Lava played no part. As of 23 October 2026, USGS reports Kīlauea’s summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, with a preliminary window for Episode 56 of 29 October to 5 November that HVO calls uncertain. No tour can promise glow, so check the USGS Kīlauea page before you go.
| Best for | Tour | Park time (operator) | Pickup | Group cap | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Park time | Hawaii Geo Tours Volcano Adventure | About 4 hours | Kona hotels | 14 | $259 per person |
| Twilight | Wasabi Twilight Volcano & Stargazing | About 3 hours, into dusk | Kona and Kohala hotels | 14 | $309 per person |
| Sightseeing day | Kailani Big Island Highlights | About 90 minutes | Central pickup points | 12 | $299 per person |
| Private | Hawaii Geo Tours Private VIP | About 4 hours | Anywhere on the island | Your group | $2,385 per group up to 2 |
| Small group | The Volcano Van Small Group | Not stated | Hotels, airport, rentals | 6 per van | $247 per person |
| Budget | Volcanoes National Park Experience | About 2 hours | 32 listed hotels | 22 | $139 per person |
| Hiking | KapohoKine Elite Volcano Hike | About 3 hours, plus a 90-minute hike | Kona and Kohala | 30 | $261 per person |
| Helicopter | Blue Hawaiian Big Island Spectacular | Flight, about 2 hours | Waikoloa heliport | Aircraft seats | $883 per person |
Best park-focused: Hawaii Geo Tours
The top pick gives the park about 240 minutes, which ties for the longest stated park time of the tours we review. Lunch is at The Rim in Volcano House, above the caldera, and the afternoon follows Chain of Craters Road from the summit to the sea. Guides are geology-focused, the company was started by a geologist, and reviewers mention the sea arches and the lava tube by name. Two catches: the day needs at least six guests to run, and Waikoloa guests must book the Waikoloa listing of the same day. Read our review for the full itinerary.
Best twilight: Wasabi Tours
Wasabi’s twilight day has 1,758 Viator reviews at 4.9, the most of any tour with its own page on this site. It picks up between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., spends about three hours at the crater stops into dusk, walks the Thurston Lava Tube, serves a picnic lunch and a restaurant dinner, and finishes with a guided stargazing stop. It is a 12-hour day. Our night tours page sets it against the other evening departures.
Best all-round sightseeing day: Kailani Tours
If the volcano is one item on a list that also includes coffee, a bakery, a black sand beach and Rainbow Falls, Kailani’s Big Island Highlights is the pick, rated 4.9 from 1,068 reviews with a 12-guest cap. Lunch is at The Rim in Volcano House. The trade-off is time: about 90 minutes in the park. Pickups are at central points such as Keauhou Shopping Center and Target in Kailua-Kona, not at hotel doors.
Best private: Hawaii Geo Tours VIP
The private VIP day keeps the four-hour park focus and picks up wherever you are staying. It is priced per group, from $2,385 for one or two guests to $3,721 for 12 to 14, and is rated 5.0 from 29 reviews. One reviewer reshuffled the stops on the day. Our private tours page covers the alternatives.
Best small group: The Volcano Van
No tour here runs smaller: six guests per van, from $247 per person, rated 4.9 from 279 reviews. It also collects from vacation rentals and B&Bs, which several larger operators do not. The itinerary does not state minutes in the park, so pick it for the group size and the Hāmākua Coast route, not for park time. See our small-group page.
Best budget: Hawaii Island Experiences
At $139 per person, the Volcanoes National Park Experience is the cheapest tour with a page on this site, with about two hours in the park and admission included. Meals are not: the lunch stop is Punaluʻu Bake Shop at your own expense, and groups run up to 22. Rated 4.7 from 251 reviews.
Best hiking: KapohoKine Elite Volcano Hike
The Elite Volcano Hike walks the 2-mile Halemaʻumaʻu Trail down to the caldera floor, after a 90-minute guided hike on lava flows earlier in the day. The listing asks for a high level of fitness, runs 13 hours and includes lunch and dinner. Rated 4.9, though from only 17 reviews. Our hiking tours page compares the walking on each tour.
Best helicopter: Blue Hawaiian from Waikoloa
The Big Island Spectacular is rated 4.8 from 134 reviews and departs the Waikoloa heliport on the Kohala Coast, not Kona airport. Under the park’s Air Tour Management Plan, helicopters cannot fly over the Kīlauea summit, where the current eruption sits, so ask the operator what the route covers today. From Kona airport itself, Rainbow Helicopters runs a Kīlauea flight with only five reviews. Details are on our helicopter page.
Before you book any of them
Check whether your tour picks up at your hotel or at a meeting point, how many minutes it gives the park, which meals are included, and the minimum age. Most of these tours list Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, and that county park is closed as of late October 2026. Prices and inclusions compared side by side are on our prices page, and if you would rather set your own pace, weigh up driving yourself.

Best Volcano Tours From Kona: Questions
How we ranked the tours, who each pick suits and what to check before you book.
For most visitors, Hawaii Geo Tours' Volcano National Park Adventure. It gives the park about four hours by the operator's itinerary, picks up at Kona hotels from about 7:45 a.m., takes no more than 14 guests and is rated 4.9 from 355 Viator reviews, from $259 per person. Lunch at Volcano House is included. Read our review.
It depends on what the first visit is for. If the volcano is the reason you came, take the Hawaii Geo Tours day with about four hours in the park. If you want a sampler of the island, Kailani's Big Island Highlights adds coffee, a bakery and Rainbow Falls around about 90 minutes in the park, rated 4.9 from 1,068 reviews. Park time by tour.
Look at the minutes inside the park, not the number of stops. Then check where it picks up, how many guests share the vehicle, which meals are included and who guides. Tours in our ranking range from about 90 minutes to about four hours in the park, and from groups of 6 to 30, at prices from $139 to $309 per person for the shared day tours.
We compared each operator's stated park minutes, pickup area, group cap, price and what it includes, and weighed ratings by how many reviews stand behind them. Tours were ranked within a traveler type, so a circle-island day never competes with a park-focused one. Visible lava played no part, because no operator controls the eruption. See what each tour costs.
Couples who want the day to themselves can book Hawaii Geo Tours' private VIP adventure, priced per group at $2,385 for one or two guests, with pickup anywhere on the island. For a shared tour with a romantic finish, Wasabi's twilight day stays at the park into dusk, includes a restaurant dinner and ends with guided stargazing, from $309 per person. Private options.
Every ground tour faces about 95 miles each way, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, between Kona and the park. Of the Kona-pickup tours on this site, The Volcano Van has the shortest stated day at 8 to 9 hours. To skip the road, Blue Hawaiian's flight runs about 2 hours from the Waikoloa heliport, but it does not fly over the summit eruption. Helicopter tours.
Yes, if your dates are fixed. Every Viator tour in our ranking offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so an early booking costs little. Small tours fill differently: The Volcano Van takes six guests per van, while Hawaii Geo Tours needs at least six guests to run and may move you to another day if numbers fall short. Small-group tours.
We have no sell-out data, so book as soon as your island days are set. With free cancellation up to 24 hours before, holding a seat early carries little risk. Check the eruption status the week you travel, since an active episode draws more visitors and can bring overlook closures. HVO's preliminary window for the next episode, as of 23 October 2026, was 29 October to 5 November.
In the reviews we read, the common complaints are the length of the day in the vehicle, weather that hides the crater, and wanting more time on foot in the park. One Hawaii Forest & Trail guest wished for more hiking, a Kailani guest warned of lots of time in travel, and a twilight guest noted the commentary can be hard to follow for non-native English speakers.
Check five things: hotel pickup or a meeting point (Hawaii Forest & Trail and Kailani use meeting points), the stated minutes in the park, which meals are included, the minimum age, and the cancellation window. Also note that Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Park, listed on many tours, has been closed since 29 August 2026, so ask the operator how the day runs. Compare all tours.
