The Experience

What the Loop Covers

Both sides of the island in one day: the Kona coffee belt, the volcano, two waterfalls near Hilo and the Waipiʻo Valley lookout, with lunch, snacks, park admissions and jackets included.

Highlights

  • Loop the whole island in a day, from the dry Kona coast to the rainforest of the Hāmākua side
  • Steam vents, the Halemaʻumaʻu and Kīlauea Iki lookouts and a short crater rim walk in the park
  • Walk through Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), about 20 minutes on the operator's itinerary
  • See Rainbow Falls in Hilo and the 442-foot ʻAkaka Falls on a short rainforest path
  • Look out over Waipiʻo Valley's sea cliffs from the lookout
  • Taste coffee at Bay View Farm in the Kona coffee belt

What's Included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off on the Kona and Kohala coasts
  • Picnic-style lunch, snacks, bottled water and Hawaiian juice
  • Park admissions and all listed fees and taxes
  • Loaner jackets
  • Professional guide in a small-group Mercedes Sprinter van
  • Coffee tasting at Bay View Farm

How the Circle-Island Day Runs

An early hotel pickup, the whole island by van, and a drop-off back at your hotel in the evening.

  1. Pickup 6:40–8:00 a.m.

The van collects at major hotels and resorts in Kona and on the Kohala Coast. Vacation-rental guests are sent to the nearest hotel pickup; there are no pickups in Hilo or on the east side.

  2. Coffee farm and the south coast

About 40 minutes at Bay View Farm for coffee, then a picnic lunch on the Kaʻū coast. Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach has been closed since 29 August 2026, so expect the stop to change.

  3. About 90 minutes at Kīlauea

Steam vents, the Halemaʻumaʻu and Kīlauea Iki crater lookouts and a short walk on the crater rim trail; the Viator listing adds about 20 minutes at the Nāhuku lava tube.

  4. Waterfalls, Waipiʻo, home

Rainbow Falls in Hilo for about 20 minutes, ʻAkaka Falls for about 30, the Waipiʻo Valley lookout for about 20, then back across Parker Ranch country. The order can run either way round.

Two Island Loops and a Volcano Day

Where the 11 hours go: waterfalls and Waipiʻo on a loop, or four hours at the crater.

Loop or volcano day

More Tours to Weigh Against the Loop

Another loop with lunch at Volcano House, and three volcano-focused days with far more time in the park.

Circle island

A Loop of the Island, With Kīlauea as One Stop

Time in the park on circle-island tours versus volcano-focused days, every stop's status in late 2026, and the loop by car.

A circle-island tour from Kona loops the whole Big Island in about 11 hours, and Kīlauea is one stop among six. Wasabi Tours’ day gives Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park about 80 to 90 minutes, while volcano-focused tours from Kona list about four hours inside the park. Book the loop if Hilo’s waterfalls and the Waipiʻo lookout matter as much to you as the crater.

Time in the park: loop or volcano day

This is the comparison that decides the booking. The minutes below are each operator’s own itinerary figures.

TourTypeLengthTime in the parkFromRating

The total length is almost the same either way; the difference is where the hours go. A loop trades about two and a half hours at the volcano for two waterfalls, Hilo and Waipiʻo. The Viator listing of the Wasabi loop carries 7,150 reviews, more than any other volcano listing we track, but it is a circle-island day, not a park-focused one.

The Wasabi loop, stop by stop

Wasabi’s itinerary lists Bay View Farm for coffee (about 40 minutes), Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach with a picnic lunch (about 50), the park (about 1.5 hours), Rainbow Falls (about 20), ʻAkaka Falls State Park (about 30) and the Waipiʻo Valley lookout (about 20). In the park the guide takes in the steam vents, the Halemaʻumaʻu and Kīlauea Iki crater lookouts and a short walk on the crater rim trail; the Viator version adds about 20 minutes at the Nāhuku lava tube. The GetYourGuide description runs the waterfalls in the morning and the volcano in the afternoon, so the direction can change.

Pickup runs from 6:40 to 8:00 a.m. at major hotels and resorts in Kona and on the Kohala Coast, with 19 pickup options on the GetYourGuide listing; vacation-rental guests are sent to the nearest hotel. Lunch and drinks, snacks, park admissions and jackets are included. Guests must be 5 or older, the group is capped at 14, and tours run rain or shine. Our full review covers the listing in detail.

Where each stop stands in late 2026

Several of the loop’s stops have changed this year, and operator listings have not all caught up:

  • Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach: the county beach park has been closed since 29 August 2026, when its lease ended, and stays closed until a county purchase is complete. Operators adjust the route; check your voucher or ask.
  • Rainbow Falls: since January 2026 non-residents pay $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle at Wailuku River State Park.
  • ʻAkaka Falls: the 442-ft falls sit on a 0.4-mile loop trail, and DLNR reported part of the trail closed by fallen trees on 23 October 2026.
  • Waipiʻo Valley: the lookout at the end of Highway 240 is open; the road down into the valley has been restricted since 2022 to residents, Native Hawaiian practitioners and licensed operators in 4WD. The tours stop at the lookout.
  • Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube): reopened in August 2026 with a new entrance bridge.
  • Kīlauea Visitor Center: closed for renovation since February 2025; a temporary Welcome Center runs at Kilauea Military Camp, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
  • The eruption: as of 23 October 2026, the USGS Kīlauea page reports it paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, with a preliminary, uncertain window for the next episode of 29 October to 5 November. No tour can promise lava or glow.

The other loops from the west side

Kailani’s Big Island Highlights goes south on Highway 11 and returns over Saddle Road. It stops at a coffee farm, Punaluʻu Bake Shop and the black sand beach, serves lunch at Volcano House, spends about 90 minutes in the park including the Thurston Lava Tube, then visits Rainbow Falls and Big Island Candies and crosses Parker Ranch country. Pickup is at central points: 7:00 a.m. at Queens’ Marketplace in Waikoloa, 7:30 at Kona airport, 7:45 at Kona Commons Target and 8:15 at Keauhou Shopping Center. Groups are capped at 12, binoculars and umbrellas are supplied, and the same trip sells on GetYourGuide as Coffee, Black Sand, Volcano and Waterfall Tour. See our Big Island Highlights review.

Ohana Tours runs the shortest day at 9 hours, with veteran owner-guides, 90 minutes in the park, Rainbow and ʻAkaka Falls and Big Island Candies. Entrance fees and snacks are included but lunch is at your own expense. Kona pickups run about 8:00 to 8:15 a.m. and Waikoloa about 7:00 to 7:15.

KapohoKine sells two 12-hour loops on GetYourGuide for $209 per person, capped at 13: the Full Day Circle Island Tour from Kona, with no lunch included, and From Waikoloa: Big Island Tour with Lunch. Both end at the Waipiʻo overlook; the Kona listing still names the closed Kīlauea Visitor Center.

Driving the loop yourself

You can drive around the island in a day, but it is a long one. Using NPS figures, Kona to the park on Highway 11 is about 95 miles (2 to 2.5 hours), and the park back to Kona through Hilo, the Hāmākua Coast and Waimea on Highways 11 and 19 is about 125 miles (2.5 to 3 hours). That adds up to about 220 miles and 4.5 to 5.5 hours at the wheel before any stops. Cutting back over Saddle Road from Hilo (about 77.6 miles to Kona) shortens it to about 200 miles but skips Waipiʻo.

Budget the fees too: $30 per vehicle at the national park, and $5 per person plus $10 per car at both Rainbow Falls and ʻAkaka Falls for non-residents. Our self-drive vs guided page and one-day park itinerary go further.

Who the loop suits

  • A first visit with one day to spare, where the waterfalls and Waipiʻo matter as much as the crater: the Wasabi loop or Kailani’s Highlights.
  • Time at the crater first: a volcano day with about four hours in the park, compared on our Volcanoes National Park tours page.
  • The black sand beach and turtles: read our volcano tours with a black sand beach page for the Punaluʻu closure first.
  • Families: Wasabi and Kailani take children from 5; the day is long in a van.

When the loop fits your day, check dates for the Wasabi circle-island tour.

Also, lunch was delicious, and the quick stop we made for fresh coconut and sugar cane was a wonderful experience."
