How the Afternoon-into-Dinner Day Runs
A late-morning pickup, the drive south, the crater in the afternoon and dinner before the ride home.
Pickup from 11:00 AM
Central pickups run from Queens' Marketplace in Waikoloa at 11:00 AM, Kona airport at 11:30, Kona Commons Target at 11:45 and Keauhou Shopping Center at 12:15 PM, with listed Kona and Kohala hotels too. Children under 5 cannot join.
Coffee and the Kaʻū coast
Forty-five minutes at Greenwell Farms with a tasting, then 20 minutes at Punaluʻu Bake Shop. The listing also names a 30-minute Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach stop, but the county beach park has been closed since 29 August 2026.
Ninety minutes at the crater
About 90 minutes at the crater stops inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Lava and glow are never guaranteed: the summit eruption is episodic, and fog or rain can hide the crater. A light jacket and binoculars are provided.
Dinner, then home
A 90-minute, three-course restaurant dinner (the GetYourGuide listing names Kilauea Lodge), then the drive back to your pickup point. The day runs about 11 hours, so expect to be back between about 10 and 11:15 PM.

Day or night
Day or Night at Kīlauea: How to Choose
What each time of day shows, when the tours leave and return, and what the summit weather does after dark.
Choose a day tour if you want to see the caldera, the craters, Nāhuku and Chain of Craters Road in daylight and be back on the Kona side by about 7 PM. Choose a tour that stays into dusk if any glow matters most to you, and accept that it depends on the eruption: as of 23 October 2026, USGS reports Kīlauea’s summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, and during a pause there may be only a faint glow from older lava, or nothing. Kailani’s afternoon-into-dinner tour sits between the two, and it is our featured pick for that reason.
What each time of day shows
In daylight you see the shape of the place: the summit caldera, the gas plume, the steam vents, the crater walls and, on the longer tours, the road down to Hōlei Sea Arch. Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) is lit from 8 AM to 8 PM, and the temporary Welcome Center at Kilauea Military Camp opens 9 AM to 4:45 PM. A daytime tour can see an eruption too; Episode 55’s fountains, which reached just over 700 feet, ran from 3:19 to 9:03 AM.
After dark, what you gain is the chance of glow. NPS says that during an active phase you may see lava fountains, flowing lava and a strong glow, especially at night. During a pause the crater is mostly dark, and fog or rain can block the view at any hour. HVO’s preliminary window for Episode 56 is 29 October to 5 November 2026, and it notes uncertainty; episodes can last only a few hours. Check the USGS Kīlauea page and its summit webcams on the day.
The park itself is open 24 hours, so a night visit is allowed, but Kīlauea Overlook is at its busiest from 5 to 9 PM, and NPS recommends coming before sunrise for a quieter view.
How the departures differ
The return times below are arithmetic: the earliest and latest listed pickup plus the listed length of the day. Traffic and stops move them.
| Tour | Pickup | Length | Time in the park | Back about | Meals | At the park after dark? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volcano Adventure with a Geologist (day) | 7:45 AM onward, Kona | 11 h | About 4 hours | 6:45–7 PM | Lunch | No; the drive home over Saddle Road may be after sunset in winter |
| Deluxe Volcano Experience with Dinner (afternoon into dinner) | 11:00 AM–12:15 PM | 11 h | About 90 min, then dinner | 10–11:15 PM | Picnic lunch, dinner | Possibly at dusk in the short-day months; not stated |
| Twilight Volcano & Stargazing | 9:30–10:30 AM | 12 h | About 3 hours, plus the lava tube | 9:30–10:30 PM | Picnic lunch, dinner | ✓ Day and twilight, then a stargazing stop |
KapohoKine’s Evening Volcano Explorer also runs 12 hours with about four hours in the park, lunch and dinner. Our night tours page compares the evening departures in detail, and the stargazing tours page covers the astronomy side.
Sunset by month
Hawaiʻi does not change its clocks, so sunset moves only with the season. These are Kona times on the 15th of each month; sunset at the park comes roughly 8 to 10 minutes earlier.
| Month | Sunset | Dark (end of civil twilight) |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 6:06 PM | 6:29 PM |
| Mar | 6:34 PM | 6:56 PM |
| May | 6:52 PM | 7:16 PM |
| Jul | 7:06 PM | 7:30 PM |
| Sep | 6:27 PM | 6:48 PM |
| Nov | 5:45 PM | 6:08 PM |
For a time-of-day choice this matters in one way. From November to January a tour still at the crater around 6 PM is there at dusk; in June and July it would need to stay until about 7:30 PM. A twilight tour that leaves the park at the same hour all year therefore sees more darkness in winter. For month-by-month weather and crowds, see our guide to the best time for Kīlauea tours.
Weather and temperature at the summit
The summit sits at about 4,000 feet, and NPS says it can be 12 to 15°F cooler than at sea level, rainy and chilly at any time of year. Park headquarters averages a daily mean of 56.4°F in its coolest month and 62.7°F in its warmest, against 71 to 78°F at Kona airport, and it gets about 104 inches of rain a year to Kona’s 13. Nights are colder still, and NPS tells night visitors to bring warm clothes, rain gear and a headlamp. The tours help: Kailani lends a light jacket, Wasabi a rain and warm jacket, and Hawaii Geo Tours coats, raincoats and umbrellas. Our what to wear guide has the packing list.
Photography
Daylight is easier for most cameras and phones. The caldera’s scale, the plume, the crater walls and the sea arch all read well in good light, and you can shoot quickly at each stop. Night photography of the glow needs two things you cannot book: an active episode and a clear sky. If you do get them, a phone’s night mode or a camera braced on a rail beats handheld shots, and the busiest overlooks at 5 to 9 PM leave little room to set up. NPS asks visitors to watch quietly; the area is culturally significant to Native Hawaiians.
Pros and cons
Day tours
- More park time for less money: about four hours on the Hawaii Geo Tours day at $259.
- Daylight for Nāhuku, the craters and Chain of Craters Road.
- Back by about 7 PM, but the start is early, around 7:45 AM.
- Glow, if any, is faint or unseen in daylight.
Twilight and dinner tours
- The only way to be at the crater at dusk without driving yourself.
- No early start: Kailani picks up from 11 AM, Wasabi from 9:30 AM.
- Dinner included, which offsets their higher prices of $342 and $309.
- Back late, between about 9:30 and 11:15 PM, after an 11 to 12 hour day, and colder at the crater.
Which to book
If the eruption is paused and you care most about seeing Kīlauea properly, book the day tour with Hawaii Geo Tours. If you want the crater toward evening and a proper dinner without an early alarm, Kailani’s Deluxe Volcano Experience is the comfortable middle choice, rated 4.9 from 631 Viator reviews; its trade-off is 90 minutes in the park. If an episode is under way and dusk at the crater is the whole point, Wasabi’s twilight tour is the one whose itinerary states twilight at the crater. Read our review of Kailani’s dinner tour, or see dates for the dinner tour.

Day or Night at Kīlauea: Questions
Park hours after dark, when any glow shows, and which departure suits photos.
Only when the eruption is active. NPS says that during an active phase you may see fountains, flowing lava and a strong glow, especially at night. As of 23 October 2026 USGS reports the summit eruption paused after Episode 55, and during a pause the crater is mostly dark. In daylight you see far more of the park. Lava viewing from Kona.
Yes. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including holidays. The caveat is closures: in 2026 storms, ashfall and Hurricanes Lala and Nolo shut all or parts of the park for stretches, and overlooks can close after fountaining. Check the NPS alerts page on the day you go.
Yes, the park does not close at night, and the entrance fee is the same at any hour: $30 per private vehicle, valid 7 days. Bring a headlamp, warm layers and rain gear, as NPS advises for night visits. Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) stays open but is only lit from 8 AM to 8 PM, so take a flashlight outside those hours.
No, it runs on a 24-hour schedule. Some services keep day hours: the temporary Welcome Center at Kilauea Military Camp opens 9 AM to 4:45 PM, and Nāhuku's lights run 8 AM to 8 PM. The Kahuku Unit, a separate section off Highway 11 in Kaʻū, keeps its own hours, Thursday to Sunday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
For a quieter view, NPS recommends Kīlauea Overlook before sunrise and names 5 to 9 PM as its busiest window. From Kona, no tour on this site reaches the park at dawn, so the practical choice is a day tour with long park time or a tour that stays into dusk. Best months for Kīlauea tours.
During an eruption episode, yes, often strongly. Between episodes, NPS says a faint glow from older lava may still be visible, or nothing, and fog or rain can block any view. As of 23 October 2026 the eruption is paused; HVO's preliminary window for the next episode is 29 October to 5 November, with uncertainty. Check the USGS webcams before you go.
Any glow shows once the sky darkens, which at the park means a little after sunset: Kona's sunset runs from about 5:45 PM in late November to 7:06 PM in early July, and the park's comes 8 to 10 minutes earlier. Whether there is a glow at all depends on an active episode, not the clock. Kona volcano night tours.
For most people, a day tour. Daylight shows the caldera, plume, crater walls and the road down to the sea, and every phone handles it. Night shots of the glow need an active episode, clear skies and a steady support, and the overlooks are busiest from 5 to 9 PM. A twilight tour gives you both if the eruption cooperates.
Glow is a night effect. NPS describes a strong glow especially at night, and in daylight you see the plume, the crater and, during an episode, the fountains themselves: Episode 55 on 17 October 2026 ran from 3:19 to 9:03 AM with fountains just over 700 feet, nearly half of it after sunrise. During a pause there is little to see either way.
