How the Budget Park Day Runs

An 11-hour loop from the west side to Kīlauea and back, with a narrating local guide.

  1. Pickup on the west side

The listing collects from 32 hotels across Kona and the Kohala Coast. If you are flying into Kona, the meeting point is the lot behind Alaska Airlines baggage claim B-2.

  2. South on Highway 11

Stops at Greenwell Farms for Kona coffee, Manuka State Wayside Park and Punaluʻu Bake Shop for lunch, which you pay for. The listed beach stop depends on the Punaluʻu county park, closed since 29 August 2026.

  3. About two hours in the park

The operator gives about 120 minutes to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and your guide hands out the entry tickets in the morning. Bring layers: the summit is about 4,000 ft up and often cool and wet.

  4. Back across the island

After the park, the itinerary lists Hilo, the Maunakea Access Road and the Kohala Coast, so the return crosses the island. The whole day runs about 11 hours.

The journey

Getting From Kona to Kīlauea

Miles, routes, fuel, fees and the drive home in the dark.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is 95 miles from Kailua-Kona on Highway 11, a drive of 2 to 2.5 hours each way according to the National Park Service. That makes a day trip four to five hours of driving before you spend any time at Kīlauea. This page covers the journey itself: the routes, the distances from different starting points, fuel, fees and the drive back after dark, plus the cheapest guided way to make the trip.

The three routes

Kona sits on the dry west side of the island and the park on the southeast, so you either go around the south end or cross the middle.

RouteDistance from Kailua-KonaDrive time without stopsWhat you passGood to know
Highway 11 south95 miles2 to 2.5 hoursThe Kona coffee belt, South Kona, then Kaʻū: Ocean View, Nāʻālehu, the South Point Road turnoff, Punaluʻu, PāhalaThe park’s own recommended route; you enter from the west
Saddle Road (Route 200) and HiloAbout 103 milesAbout 2 hours 8 minutesThe saddle between Maunakea and Mauna Loa, cresting at about 6,632 ft, then Hilo and 30 miles of Highway 11Long stretches with no services; weather changes fast
Highway 19 via Waimea and Hilo125 miles2.5 to 3 hoursWaimea, the Hāmākua Coast, HiloThe longest way; the park service lists it as the alternative

Highway 11 and Saddle Road take about the same time from Kona, so the choice is about scenery and what you want to stop for. A loop works well: down Highway 11 in the morning, with daylight for the coffee belt and the Kaʻū coast, and back over Saddle Road. Several tours follow that shape; the Hawaii Geo Tours day, for instance, gives 90 minutes of its itinerary to the Saddle Road crossing.

From Hilo the park is 30 miles southwest on Highway 11, about 45 minutes. From Kona to Hilo over Saddle Road is about 77.6 miles and an hour and a half.

Where you start changes the miles

The 95-mile figure is from Kailua-Kona town. Kona International Airport lies about 7 miles north of town, so from the rental lot allow a little over 100 miles and the same 2 to 2.5 hours. Keauhou, 5 to 7 miles south of town, is already part-way along Highway 11, which leaves roughly 88 to 90 miles. Staying on the Kohala Coast changes the sums more: from Waikoloa it is about 120 miles via Kona and Highway 11, or about 93 via Saddle Road. Our page on volcano tours from Waikoloa covers that side.

Fuel, food and phone signal

There are no gas stations inside the park. Fill up in Kona or Captain Cook before you leave; on the Kaʻū stretch of Highway 11, fuel is listed at Ocean View and Nāʻālehu, though we could not confirm their hours. Inside the park, Chain of Craters Road has no food, water or fuel along its 18.8 miles, and cell service is limited, so download maps before you go.

The old Kīlauea Visitor Center just inside the entrance has been closed for renovation since February 2025. A temporary Welcome Center and the park store run at Kilauea Military Camp, about 1.2 miles further along Crater Rim Drive West, daily from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with portable toilets.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes is not one of the parks with the 2026 surcharge for non-US residents. The remaining 2026 fee-free days for US citizens and residents are 27 October and 11 November. On a tour, check whether admission is included: it is on the featured Hawaii Island Experiences day.

Driving back in the dark

Whichever way you go, the return often happens after sunset, which comes between about 5:45 p.m. in early December and just after 7 p.m. in early July on the Kona side. Highway 11 through Kaʻū and Saddle Road both have long stretches with no services. Saddle Road climbs to about 6,632 ft and its weather changes quickly, and nēnē, the Hawaiian goose, wander onto park roads. The summit itself averages in the mid-50s to low 60s °F and can be 12 to 15 degrees cooler than Kona, so pack a warm layer for the evening even in summer; our what to wear guide goes through it.

Rental cars and the Saddle Road

Rental counters at Kona airport are in a facility on the airport grounds, reached by a free shuttle from opposite baggage claim. Travel guides say most rental contracts now allow Saddle Road since it was rebuilt, but policies differ by company and car class, so read yours. The Maunakea summit road above the visitor station is a separate matter: it is four-wheel drive only and commonly excluded.

The cheapest guided way to make the trip

If you would rather not drive, the lowest fare among the tours on this site is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Experience from Hawaii Island Experiences, at $139 per adult, $129 for children aged 3 to 11 and free for infants. Park admission is included, and pickups cover 32 hotels across Kona and the Kohala Coast, plus a meeting point at Kona airport. Meals are at your own expense, with a lunch stop at Punaluʻu Bake Shop.

For two adults the Hawaii Island Experiences fare comes to $278, and for four $556, with entry paid. Driving yourself costs the $30 vehicle pass plus your rental day and fuel, which we have not priced. The trade-off is time in the park: two hours on the budget day against four on the Hawaii Geo Tours day. Our self-drive vs guided page weighs the whole decision, our one-day park itinerary plans the hours once you arrive, and our budget tour review covers the Hawaii Island Experiences day in full.

If the volcano is your main reason to make the trip, remember lava is never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026 the summit eruption was paused after Episode 55 (USGS Kīlauea updates).
