How the Twilight Day Runs

Late-morning pickup, the Kaʻū coast, the park into dusk and a late return.

  1. Pickup 9:30–10:30 a.m.

Collection from major hotels and resorts on the Kona and Kohala Coast. Vacation-rental guests are sent to the nearest hotel or a named Kohala meeting spot, and the exact time comes with your reconfirmation.

  2. Coffee, macadamias, coast

A Kona coffee farm with a picnic lunch above Kealakekua Bay, a macadamia nut farm, then a black sand beach stop. Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so expect the operator to adjust that stop.

  3. Three hours into twilight

Steam vents, a crater lookout, part of Chain of Craters Road and the crater rim trail, plus 20 minutes in the Thurston Lava Tube. Glow shows only if Kīlauea is active that evening.

  4. Dinner and stargazing

A restaurant dinner, then about 30 minutes of guided stargazing on the way home, weather permitting. The day runs about 12 hours, so plan on a late return.

What an Evening at Kīlauea Looks Like

Return times, dinners, what shows after dark, and how cold the rim gets.

Three volcano tours from Kona stay at Kīlauea into the evening: Wasabi Tours’ Twilight Volcano and Stargazing Tour, KapohoKine’s Evening Volcano Explorer and Kailani’s Deluxe Volcano Experience with Restaurant Dinner. None of them is a short night-only trip. Each is an 11 to 12 hour day that leaves Kona in the late morning or around midday, includes dinner and gets you back late in the evening. No tour controls whether the crater glows.

What you might see after dark

Kīlauea’s current eruption is episodic. As of 23 October 2026, USGS reports the summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October 2026, which fountained for about six hours. HVO’s preliminary window for Episode 56 is 29 October to 5 November 2026, and HVO notes the forecast is uncertain. Episodes last hours, and pauses have run from days to weeks; the gap between Episodes 54 and 55 was 53 days.

During an active phase, NPS says you may see lava fountains, flowing lava and a strong glow, especially at night. During a pause, a faint glow from older lava may still show, and fog or rain can hide everything. No night tour can promise glow, so check the USGS Kīlauea page and its webcams the day before, bearing in mind USGS notes that the webcams show little at night without glow and can be blocked by cloud or rain. The named NPS viewing areas are Uēkahuna, Kīlauea Overlook at the Steam Vents, Kūpinaʻi Pali and Keanakākoʻi, and NPS names 5 to 9 p.m. as the busiest window at Kīlauea Overlook. Our lava viewing page covers what to expect in more detail.

Wasabi Tours: twilight, dinner and stars

The featured tour picks up between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., stops at a coffee farm for a picnic lunch and a macadamia farm, then gives the park about three hours, timed to run into dusk. The 20-minute Thurston Lava Tube walk comes after. The GetYourGuide listing of the same trip names dinner at Volcano’s Lava Rock Cafe, followed by stargazing near Saddle Road Junction on the way home. The listing does not include a telescope, though one recent reviewer saw Saturn and the moon through one. Rain and warm jackets are on loan, children must be 5 or older, and the cap is 14. Read our review, and for the stargazing side see volcano and stargazing tours.

Kailani: dinner at Kilauea Lodge

Kailani’s evening tour starts later, with central pickups from 11:00 a.m. at Queens’ Marketplace in Waikoloa to 12:15 p.m. at Keauhou Shopping Center. It gives the crater stops about 90 minutes, then sits down to a three-course dinner at Kilauea Lodge in Volcano village. The GetYourGuide listing of the same trip says the group goes back into the park after dinner to look for glow if lava is flowing, and one Viator reviewer described a stop on the way back for stars and the Milky Way. A catered picnic lunch and binoculars are included, and the cap is 12. See our review.

KapohoKine: the most park time after dark

The Evening Volcano Explorer gives the park about four hours, the most of the three, for the lowest fare, $240. Its route includes a hike out to Keanakākoʻi Crater over cracks left by the 2018 eruption and a visit to Mauna Ulu. The listing also names the Kīlauea Visitor Center and Sulphur Banks; the Visitor Center has been closed for renovation since February 2025 and the Sulphur Banks Bridge was still closed after the September 2026 reopening, so expect substitutions. Lunch and dinner are included. It asks for a high level of fitness, takes up to 30 guests and has only 27 reviews. Our review has more.

How cold it gets at the rim

The summit sits at about 4,000 feet. Its average daily mean temperature runs from about 56°F in the coolest month to about 63°F in the warmest, against about 71°F to 78°F at Kona airport, and NPS says the summit can be 12 to 15 degrees cooler than sea level. Nights are colder still, the park averages 104 inches of rain a year, and NPS advises warm clothes and rain gear after dark. Wasabi lends rain and warm jackets and Kailani a light jacket, but bring a fleece and closed-toe shoes. Our what to wear guide has a full list.

Sunset and timing

Sunset in Kona runs from about 5:45 p.m. in late November and December to about 7:06 p.m. in early July, and the park is roughly 8 to 10 minutes earlier. In winter, dusk arrives while these tours are still in the park. In June and July it comes later, so the dark portion of the visit is shorter. On a late-October tour, Kona sunset is about 6:01 p.m. and civil dusk ends about 6:23 p.m., so the twilight crater stops run through the change from daylight to dark.

Night tour or daytime tour

A night tour suits travelers who want the chance of glow and a sit-down dinner, and who can handle a late return. Families with young children and anyone who tires on long vehicle days may prefer a daytime park tour such as Hawaii Geo Tours’ Volcano National Park Adventure, which is back by evening. Our day or night comparison weighs both.
