How the $139 Day Runs

Hotel or airport pickup, two short stops in South Kona, lunch in Kaʻū and two hours in the park.

  1. Pickup on the Kona side

Pickup is included from the listed Kona and Kohala Coast hotels. If you are flying in, the operator meets arrivals at the lot behind Alaska Airlines baggage claim B-2 at Kona airport. The driver hands out all entry tickets that morning.

  2. Coffee and a wayside park

Thirty minutes at Greenwell Farms in the Kona coffee belt, then 30 minutes at Manuka State Wayside Park, a 13-acre forest park on the way south to Kaʻū.

  3. Lunch at your own expense

Lunch is at Punaluʻu Bake Shop in Nāʻālehu, paid by you; bring cash for stands and shops. The listing also names a black sand beach stop, but Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Park has been closed since 29 August 2026.

  4. Two hours in the park

About 120 minutes inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, admission included, then the long drive home. Lava and glow are never guaranteed. Tips are not included, and the operator notes that cash tips are appreciated.

Prices compared

What Kona Volcano Tours Cost, and Why

Every shared, private and helicopter price on this site, with the arithmetic per hour and per park hour.

Shared volcano tours from Kona start at $139 per person, and most full-day shared tours cost between $240 and $342 per person. Private days with Hawaii Geo Tours start at $2,385 per group, and helicopter flights start at $883 per person. Every road tour covers the same 95 miles each way from Kailua-Kona to the park, so the price differences come from meals, group size and, most of all, how long the tour spends inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Shared tour prices, per hour and per park hour

The from-prices below are the live listing prices, worded as the listing words them. The last two columns are plain arithmetic: the from-price divided by the listed length of the day, and the from-price divided by the operator’s own itinerary minutes inside the park. They are a way to compare value, not a figure any operator quotes.

Three things stand out. Per hour of the day, every shared tour lands between $13 and $31, so the length of the day does not explain the spread. Per hour in the park, the spread is wide: from $60 and $65 on the KapohoKine evening tour and the Hawaii Geo Tours day to over $200 on the circle-island and dinner days that give the crater 80 to 90 minutes. And the cheapest ticket is not far behind on park value: at $70 per park hour, the $139 tour gives more crater time per dollar than any tour above $270 in the table, partly because you buy your own lunch.

Two caveats on the table. The Volcano Van lists its whole day as one 8 to 9 hour leg and does not break out park minutes, so it gets no per-park-hour figure. And Hawaii Forest & Trail’s $309 day meets at central start points in Kona with no hotel pickup, which the other prices include.

What the price includes

Meals are the biggest hidden difference. Hawaii Island Experiences leaves all meals to you and stops for lunch at Punaluʻu Bake Shop; Ohana Tours stops at a local spot where lunch is also at your own expense. The twilight, evening and dinner tours include two meals, which narrows their gap with the day tours once you price a restaurant dinner yourself.

The park fee is in the price on the tours marked ✓ above. Where a Viator listing does not mention it, the GetYourGuide listing of the same trip sometimes does, as with Kailani’s two tours and KapohoKine’s evening tour. Where neither mentions it, ask the operator before you book.

Gratuities are excluded on almost every listing, and none states an amount. Kailani’s GetYourGuide listing also includes entry to Rainbow Falls, which since January 2026 charges non-residents $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle.

Children’s prices

Only two listings publish a separate child fare. Hawaii Island Experiences charges $129 for ages 3 to 11, and infants up to 2 ride free. Wasabi’s twilight tour charges $298 to $309 for ages 5 to 12. Hawaii Geo Tours prices everyone from age 6 at the adult fare, and Kailani does not take children under 5 on its shared tours. Check the child fare at checkout for any other tour.

Private tours: priced per group

The Private VIP Adventure from Hawaii Geo Tours is priced per group, by party size, with about four hours in the park and pickup anywhere on the island by arrangement. The per-person column assumes the largest party in each tier.

Party sizePrice per groupPer person at the top of the tier
1–2 guests$2,385$1,193
3–4 guests$2,651$663
5–7 guests$2,920$417
8–11 guests$3,199$291
12–14 guests$3,721$266

A family of 12 to 14 pays about the same per head as the shared Hawaii Geo Tours day. The Volcano Van’s private option costs $385 per person on the same itinerary as its shared $247 van. A Kona SUV charter on GetYourGuide, Private Big Island Tour with Volcanoes & Beaches, costs $900 per group of up to 6 for 8 hours, with meals excluded and only 4 reviews. Our private volcano tours page compares these in full, and our review covers the VIP day.

Helicopter fares

Blue Hawaiian’s Big Island Spectacular costs $883 per person and its landing version $1,150, both from the Waikoloa heliport. Rainbow Helicopters’ Kīlauea flight from Kona airport costs $1,180 per person shared (doors on or off) and $1,770 per person private doors-off, with cancellation up to 48 hours before. Under the park’s Air Tour Management Plan, no route flies over the erupting summit, so ask each operator what its current route covers. Our helicopter page explains the routes.

Cancellation

Every tour in the tables offers free cancellation: a full refund up to 24 hours before on Viator and on most GetYourGuide listings, and 48 hours before on the Rainbow flight. Wasabi’s twilight listing adds that refunds are not given for closures or itinerary changes outside its control.

The cheapest way to see the volcano

Driving yourself costs $30 in park fees for a private vehicle, valid 7 days and covering everyone in the car, or $15 per person on foot or by bicycle, with ages 15 and under free. The Hawaiʻi Tri-Park Annual Pass costs $55, and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes is not one of the parks with the 2026 non-resident surcharge. On 27 October and 11 November 2026, entry is free for US citizens and residents. Add your own rental and fuel; there are no gas stations inside the park. Our self-drive vs guided page weighs the two.

Lava is never part of the price: as of 23 October 2026, USGS reports the summit eruption paused after Episode 55, with a preliminary, uncertain window for the next episode of 29 October to 5 November. Check the USGS Kīlauea page before you book, then see dates for the $139 tour.
