How the Private VIP Day Runs
Pick the tier for your party size, plan the stops with the operator, then a full day across the island.
Book the tier for your party
The price is per group, not per person: 1–2 guests, 3–4, 5–7, 8–11 or 12–14. Pick the tier that matches your party, and checkout happens on Viator.
Plan the day by phone
Hawaii Geo Tours contacts you at least the day before to talk through what you want to see. Pickup is arranged for wherever you are staying, Kona, Waikoloa or elsewhere on the island.
About four hours at Kīlauea
The listing's park leg runs about 240 minutes: a walk along the closed Crater Rim Road to the caldera overlook, Chain of Craters Road, and a lava tube. Lunch, water, snacks and rain gear are included.
Hilo and Saddle Road home
The return can take in Hilo, Rainbow Falls and a lava-tube skylight, then crosses the island on Saddle Road. The listed Punaluʻu stop depends on the county beach park, closed since 29 August 2026.

Private vs shared
What You Pay For When the Van Is Yours
Per-group and per-person prices side by side, worked out for parties of 2, 4 and 6.
A private volcano tour from Kona costs from $2,385 for a party of one or two with Hawaii Geo Tours, and the price is for the whole group, so it falls fast per head as the party grows. What you buy is control: one party in the vehicle, a pickup wherever you are staying, a plan agreed before the day, and about four hours inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Below are the private options sold from the Kona side, with the arithmetic for parties of two, four and six.
Private and shared, side by side
There are three ways to have a guide to yourself. A full private day starts at your hotel and does the whole round trip. A private option on a small-group tour books every seat in a van that would otherwise be shared. An in-park private guide meets you at Kīlauea, which only works if you drive the two hours and more yourself.
| Tour | Price basis | Length | Time in the park | Pickup | Party size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hawaii Geo Tours Private VIP Adventure | From $2,385 per group (1–2 guests) | 11 hours | About 240 minutes (operator itinerary) | Anywhere on the island, by arrangement | Tiers up to 14 |
| The Volcano Van, private option | $385 per person | 8–9 hours | Not stated by the operator | Hotels, airport, vacation rentals and B&Bs island-wide | Up to 6 per booking |
| DAIWEI private SUV tour | $900 per group up to 6 | About 8 hours | Not stated | Kona-area hotels | Up to 6 |
| Big Island VIP in-park private guide | $625 per group up to 10 | 3 hours | The whole tour | None: you meet the van in the park | Up to 10 |
| Kilauea EcoGuides private eco tour | $200 per person, minimum 2 | 3–6 hours | The whole tour | None: you meet at Volcano House in the park | Up to 25 |
| Hawaii Geo Tours shared day (for scale) | $259 per person | 11 hours | About 240 minutes | Kona hotels | Up to 14 per booking |
The DAIWEI listing has four reviews and a thin description, so we name it for completeness and do not review it.
The per-person arithmetic
Per-group prices are hard to compare with per-person ones until you divide them. The figures below are simple arithmetic from the listed prices; they are not quotes, and the two in-park guides exclude the $30 vehicle entry fee you pay at the gate.
| Party | Hawaii Geo private VIP | Volcano Van private | DAIWEI SUV | Big Island VIP in park | Kilauea EcoGuides | Hawaii Geo shared |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $2,385 total, $1,192.50 each | $770 total, $385 each | $900 total, $450 each | $625 total, $312.50 each | $400 total, $200 each | $518 total, $259 each |
| 4 | $2,651 total, $662.75 each | $1,540 total, $385 each | $900 total, $225 each | $625 total, $156.25 each | $800 total, $200 each | $1,036 total, $259 each |
| 6 | $2,920 total, $486.67 each | $2,310 total, $385 each | $900 total, $150 each | $625 total, $104.17 each | $1,200 total, $200 each | $1,554 total, $259 each |
Hawaii Geo’s larger tiers keep the pattern going: $3,199 for 8–11 guests and $3,721 for 12–14. A party of 14 works out at $265.79 each, $6.79 more per person than a seat on the shared day with the same operator. For a full breakdown across every tour type, see our Kona volcano tour prices page.
What the Hawaii Geo private day includes
The featured tour is the private version of the geologist-led day that Hawaii Geo Tours also runs as a shared tour. The listing includes lunch, water, drinks and snacks, plus coats, raincoats and umbrellas for the summit, which sits at about 4,000 ft and is often 12 to 15 degrees cooler than the coast. The operator contacts you at least the day before to talk through what you want to see, and says it fits the schedule to you.
Its itinerary gives about 240 minutes to the park: a walk along the abandoned Crater Rim Road to the newer caldera overlook, Chain of Craters Road with its craters, lava-flow walks, petroglyphs and sea arch, and a lava tube. The rest of the day can add a Kona coffee farm, a drive through Hilo, the 80-foot Rainbow Falls, a lava-tube skylight reached by a metal ladder, and the Saddle Road crossing home. Our private VIP tour review goes through the day in more detail.
Two caveats apply to every tour here. The listing still names Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, and that county park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so expect the route to change around it. And lava is never guaranteed: Kīlauea’s summit eruption comes in short episodes, and as of 23 October 2026 it was paused after Episode 55 on 17 October (USGS Kīlauea updates).
Who a private tour suits
Couples pay the steepest premium. At $1,192.50 each, Hawaii Geo’s private day costs more than four times a shared seat on its own tour. The Volcano Van’s private option at $385 each is the gentler step up, though its 8–9 hour day also covers the Hāmākua Coast rainforests and waterfalls and does not state how long you spend in the park. Our Volcano Van review covers that itinerary.
Families of four to six get the most from going private. At six, Hawaii Geo works out at $486.67 each and the Volcano Van at $385 each, and both listings allow strollers. The Volcano Van has infant seats and a child band from age 0, while Hawaii Geo’s private listing takes all ages, which matters because its shared day starts at age 6. Our guide to volcano tours for families covers age limits and the long hours in a vehicle.
Groups of eight to fourteen are where the per-group price earns its keep, since no shared van fits them all and the top tier lands close to the shared fare.
Drivers who want a guide but not a van should look at the in-park options. Big Island VIP meets you outside the closed Kīlauea Visitor Center in its Mercedes van for three hours, and Kilauea EcoGuides meets you at Volcano House and guides you in your own car for three to six hours. You still face about 95 miles each way from Kona; our self-drive vs guided page weighs that drive.
Private or a small group
A capped small group gets you part of the way for less. The Volcano Van’s shared departure puts up to six guests in one van, so you share with at most one other party, and Hawaii Forest & Trail caps its chocolate-and-waterfalls day at 12 with about 240 minutes in the park. If what you want is fewer people and not a custom plan, compare our small-group volcano tours first. If you are staying on the Kohala Coast, Hawaii Geo’s private day picks up there too; our page on volcano tours from Waikoloa covers the earlier starts.
When a private day is right for your party, check dates and tiers for the Hawaii Geo private tour.

"This day long adventure was excellent. Being able to go on a private tour allowed us to make tweaks to the itinerary the day of the adventure: we opted not to get coffee and were able to adjust the schedule to fit in 13 distinct stops in a little"
"Eric is incredibly knowledgeable about the geology of the Hawaiian islands. He is also very nice and great with kids. My kids learned a ton in one trip with Eric. I would give him 6 stars if I could!"

Private Volcano Tours From Kona: Questions
Booking, pickups, party size, custom stops and tipping on a private day to Kīlauea.
Yes. Hawaii Geo Tours sells a private VIP day from Kona or Waikoloa on Viator, priced per group from $2,385 for one or two guests, with about four hours in the park. The Volcano Van also offers a private option on its small-group day at $385 per person. Both collect you from your accommodation. Checkout happens on Viator, not on this site.
On Hawaii Geo Tours' private day the listing includes lunch, water, drinks and snacks, coats, raincoats and umbrellas, and hotel pickup and drop-off. The Volcano Van's private option includes a picnic lunch, bottled water, snacks and pickup, but excludes dinner and gratuities. The in-park private guides do not include transport from Kona, and both exclude the park entry fee.
Yes. Hawaii Geo Tours' private listing is titled from Kona or Waikoloa, and its pickup list includes Hilton Waikoloa Village, Waikoloa Beach Marriott and Kings' Land; the operator says it will collect you wherever you are on the island. The Volcano Van also picks up across the Kohala Coast. Expect an earlier start from there. Volcano tours from Waikoloa.
Within reason, yes. Hawaii Geo Tours contacts you at least the day before to talk through what you want to see and says it fits the schedule to you. The DAIWEI private SUV listing also describes a flexible itinerary based on timing. Closures still apply to everyone, including the Punaluʻu beach park, closed since 29 August 2026, so ask what is open on your date.
It depends on the listing. Hawaii Geo Tours prices its private day in tiers up to 12–14 guests. The Volcano Van takes up to six per booking, the DAIWEI SUV up to six, Big Island VIP's in-park guide up to ten, and Kilauea EcoGuides up to 25 with a minimum of two. Larger parties are where per-group pricing works out best per head.
For four to six people it often makes sense. By our arithmetic from the listed prices, a family of six pays $486.67 each on Hawaii Geo's private day or $385 each on the Volcano Van's private option, and both allow strollers. Hawaii Geo's private day takes all ages, while its shared day starts at six. Volcano tours for families.
Couples pay the biggest premium. Hawaii Geo Tours' private day costs $2,385 for two, or $1,192.50 each, against $259 each for a seat on its shared day with the same four hours in the park. The Volcano Van's private option is $385 each. If you mainly want fewer people, a capped small group costs far less. Small-group volcano tours.
Yes, if you ask for it when you plan the day. Hawaii Geo Tours' private listing invites guests to explore, walk or hike with the guide, and its park leg already includes a walk along the abandoned Crater Rim Road. Longer trails take time: the Kīlauea Iki loop is 3.3 miles and about two to three hours, per the park service. Guided Kīlauea hiking tours.
Not necessarily. Hawaii Geo Tours agrees the pickup time with you, since the private day is built around your schedule. Its shared Kona day collects from about 7:45 a.m., and its Waikoloa listing starts at 6:50 a.m., which gives a sense of how early a full day to Kīlauea begins. The park is about 95 miles from Kona by Highway 11.
Tips are usually extra. The Volcano Van and Kilauea EcoGuides list gratuities as not included, and the DAIWEI listing excludes tips. Hawaii Geo Tours' private listing does not mention gratuities either way. The amount is up to you, so ask the operator when you plan the day if you want a guide to the custom, and carry some cash for it.
