Private VIP Adventure from Kona or Waikoloa

About This Experience

This is Hawaii Geo Tours’ volcano day with the van and guide to yourselves. The price is per group, not per person: $2,385 for 1–2 guests, $2,651 for 3–4, $2,920 for 5–7, $3,199 for 8–11 and $3,721 for 12–14. For a couple that is far more than the $259 a head on the shared day. For a big family or a group of friends the gap narrows fast: 12 to 14 people work out at about $266–$310 each, close to the shared price, with your own schedule.

The operator calls at least a day before to ask what you want to see, and picks up wherever you are on the island, so Waikoloa and Kohala Coast guests are covered too. The standard plan runs about 11 hours: 30 minutes at a 100% Kona coffee farm with a tasting, a black-sand beach, about 4 hours in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, a drive through Hilo, 30 minutes at Rainbow Falls, a lava-tube park where a metal ladder drops into a skylight of an 1881 Mauna Loa flow, and the drive home over Saddle Road. One reviewer skipped the coffee farm and fitted in 13 stops instead, which is the point of going private.

In the park the plan follows the shared day: a walk along the closed stretch of old Crater Rim Road to the caldera overlook, then Chain of Craters Road for craters, lava-flow walks, petroglyphs and the sea arch, plus a lava tube. Lava is never guaranteed. As of 23 October 2026 the summit eruption was paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, and weather can hide the crater; check the USGS Kīlauea page close to your date. The black-sand beach on the itinerary is Punaluʻu, whose county park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so ask the guide to swap in something else.

The listing takes all ages, says small children can ride in a stroller, and asks for moderate fitness; it is not recommended for anyone with poor cardiovascular health. Lunch, water, drinks, snacks and loaner rain gear are included. It holds a 5.0 rating from 29 Viator reviews; reviewers praise the guides’ geology knowledge, and one says their guide was great with kids.

If you are two people on a budget, the shared version in our review covers the same park time for $259 each. The Volcano Van’s private option, in our review, is a shorter 8–9 hour day at $385 per person.

What Travelers Say

Rated 5.0/5 by 29 verified Viator travelers.

Great tour with Zane, a retired geologist who is a living encyclopedia of volcano and island science and history. Fun, well organized tour

— Patricia A, Feb 2024

This day long adventure was excellent. Being able to go on a private tour allowed us to make tweaks to the itinerary the day of the adventure: we opted not to get coffee and were able to adjust the schedule to fit in 13 distinct stops in a little

— Christopher K, Sep 2021

Eric is incredibly knowledgeable about the geology of the Hawaiian islands. He is also very nice and great with kids. My kids learned a ton in one trip with Eric. I would give him 6 stars if I could!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the private VIP volcano tour cost?

It is priced per group by party size, not per person: $2,385 for 1–2 guests, $2,651 for 3–4, $2,920 for 5–7, $3,199 for 8–11 and $3,721 for 12–14 (Viator, checked 24 October 2026). Lunch, snacks, drinks, loaner rain gear and pickup are included; gratuities are not.

Can the private tour pick me up in Waikoloa?

Yes. The operator picks up wherever you are on the island and plans the route around your location, so Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and other Kohala Coast resorts are covered, as are Kona hotels and rentals. They contact you at least the day before to agree the time and place.

Can I change the itinerary?

Yes, that is what the private format is for. The operator calls ahead to ask what you want to see, and one reviewer dropped the coffee farm and fitted 13 stops into the day. The standard plan is a coffee farm, about 4 hours in the park, Hilo, Rainbow Falls, a lava tube and Saddle Road.

How much time do you spend in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?

About 4 hours on the operator’s standard itinerary, covering a walk on old Crater Rim Road to the caldera overlook, Chain of Craters Road with lava-flow walks, petroglyphs and the sea arch, and a lava tube. With a private guide you can ask for more park time and fewer stops elsewhere.

Can we bring young children?

Yes. The listing takes travelers of any age and says infants and small children can ride in a stroller, unlike the shared Geo Tours day, which starts at age 6. It still asks for moderate fitness, and the full plan is about 11 hours, so tell the guide if you want a shorter route.

When does private make more sense than the shared Geo Tours day?

Mostly for larger parties. Two people pay $2,385 private against $518 on the shared day, but 12–14 people pay about $266–$310 each, close to the $259 shared rate. Private also suits families with children under 6, Waikoloa or rental pickups, and anyone who wants to set the stops.
