Volcano National Park Adventure From Kona

About This Experience
This is the park-focused day from Kona. Hawaii Geo Tours’ own itinerary gives about 4 hours inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, lunch included, out of an 11-hour day, which is more time at Kīlauea than the circle-island tours manage. The company was started by a geologist, and reviewers keep naming the guides (David, Grant, Zane, Eric) and the way they explain what you are standing on, from tephra to reticulite.
Pickups run along the Kona coast from about 7:45 am at Kona Village and the Four Seasons to about 8:15 am at Keauhou, and the operator texts the day before to confirm your time. The first stop is a 100% Kona coffee farm for about an hour, with a tour and tasting. The route then heads south through Kaʻū. The itinerary still lists 45 minutes at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, but the county park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so expect the guide to adjust that stop.
Inside the park the day opens with a sit-down lunch (the Viator listing names the Rim Restaurant at Volcano House; the GetYourGuide listing says a restaurant in Volcano). After that you walk the closed stretch of old Crater Rim Road to the caldera overlook, drive Chain of Craters Road toward the coast for craters, lava-flow walks, petroglyphs and the sea arch, and walk through a lava tube. Lava is never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026 the summit eruption was paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, and fog or rain can hide the crater. Check the USGS Kīlauea page the night before.
The way home goes through Hilo, with 30 minutes at Big Island Candies, then about 90 minutes over Saddle Road, which tops out around 6,632 feet. Lunch is the only meal, so plan dinner back in Kona.
The same day sells for $259 per person on Viator (4.9 from 355 reviews) and on GetYourGuide as Volcanoes National Park Adventure (5.0 from 5 reviews). It is one tour on two booking sites, not two tours. If you are staying in Waikoloa or on the Kohala Coast, book Hawaii Geo Tours’ Waikoloa listing of the same day, which picks up from 6:50 am. Groups who want their own guide can compare the private version in our review, and anyone torn between day and dusk should read our review of Wasabi’s twilight tour.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the Hawaii Geo Tours day, and how much of it is in the park?
The day runs about 11 hours door to door. The operator’s itinerary gives about 4 hours inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and that block includes a 45-minute sit-down lunch, leaving roughly 3.5 hours of guided touring at the caldera overlook, along Chain of Craters Road and in a lava tube.
What time is pickup in Kona?
The operator’s pickup list starts at about 7:45 am at Kona Village and the Four Seasons, reaches downtown Kailua-Kona hotels around 7:50–8:05 am, and ends around 8:15 am at Keauhou. You get a text the day before confirming your exact time and spot, so check the phone number on your booking.
I'm staying in Waikoloa. Can I join this tour?
Not on this listing, which is for Kona pickups only. Hawaii Geo Tours sells the same day as Volcano National Park Adventure from Waikoloa, at the same $259 per person, with Kohala Coast pickups from 6:50 am. Our page on volcano tours from Waikoloa compares the options.
Will we see lava on this tour?
Maybe, but no tour can promise it. As of 23 October 2026 USGS reported the summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, with episodes lasting hours and pauses lasting days to weeks. Fog or rain can also hide the crater. Check the USGS Kīlauea page before you go.
Is lunch included, and where is it?
Yes, a sit-down restaurant lunch is included, along with snacks, water, coffee or tea. The Viator listing names the Rim Restaurant at Volcano House on the caldera rim; the GetYourGuide listing of the same day says a restaurant in Volcano. Dinner is not included, so plan it back in Kona.
Is this the same tour as Volcanoes National Park Adventure on GetYourGuide?
Yes. Both listings are the same Hawaii Geo Tours day at $259 per person: the Viator one has 355 reviews at 4.9, the GetYourGuide one 5 reviews at 5.0. Book whichever site you prefer; free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before on both.
Can children join?
Children from 6 years old can join, and everyone pays the same adult rate. Keep in mind it is an 11-hour day with long drives, and the GetYourGuide listing asks for moderate fitness. Families with younger children can look at the private version, which takes all ages.
