Big Island Volcano Adventure from Kona: Small Group

About This Experience

The Volcano Van runs the smallest groups of the shared ground tours we review: no more than 6 guests in the van, and a day of 8 to 9 hours, at least two hours shorter than the other full-day volcano tours on this site. You can book it two ways. The shared option is $247 per person, needs at least 2 guests, and another party of up to 5 may join you. The private option is $385 per person for your party alone, from a single guest.

The GetYourGuide listing of the same trip sets out the route. You leave Kona on Highway 19 past the Waimea ranch land, cross to the Hāmākua Coast, stop at Laupāhoehoe for its sea cliffs and walk to ʻAkaka Falls, a 442-foot drop into Kolekole Gulch (part of the trail was closed by fallen trees as of 23 October 2026). Lunch is included, described on Viator as a picnic and on GetYourGuide as wraps from a café in Honomū. Then comes Hilo and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park for the summit caldera and the east rift zone, before the drive home over Saddle Road with stops at different elevations.

The operator lists the whole day as one 540-minute leg and does not say how long you spend inside the park, so if park time is your priority, ask before booking. Lava is never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026 the summit eruption was paused after Episode 55 on 17 October. One September 2026 reviewer still saw lava in the distance through heavy steam on a very rainy day. Check the USGS Kīlauea page close to your date.

Reviewers mostly name Scott as their guide, and one describes a different loop via a coffee farm, Punaluʻu Bake Shop and a black-sand beach, so the route can vary. If it goes through Kaʻū, note that Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach park has been closed since 29 August 2026. Children of any age can come, infant seats are available and strollers are fine, which makes this one of the easier picks for families with small children.

It holds 4.9 from 279 Viator reviews, and the same trip sells on GetYourGuide from $228 per person (5.0 from 5 reviews). For a geology-led day with about 4 hours in the park, compare our review; for a fully private guide who plans the stops with you, see our review of the Hawaii Geo Tours VIP day.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.9/5 by 279 verified Viator travelers.

We had a very rainy day, but Scott our tour guide made it a fun day and did the best he could with the weather he was working with. He had umbrellas for all of us, we still could see the lava in the distance even though it was very steamy. Th

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the shared and private options?

Same itinerary, different company. The shared option is $247 per person, needs at least 2 guests, and another party of up to 5 may join, so the van never holds more than 6. The private option is $385 per person and the van is yours alone, with a minimum of 1 guest.

How much time do you get inside the park?

The operator does not say. Its itinerary is one 540-minute leg covering the whole day, and the GetYourGuide listing describes the summit caldera and the east rift zone without minutes. If park time matters most, ask before booking, or compare the Hawaii Geo Tours day, which lists about 4 hours.

Where does the Volcano Van pick up?

Almost anywhere on the island. The listing names 34 hotels from Kailua-Kona to Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, plus Kona airport, and the operator also picks up at vacation rentals and B&Bs island-wide. No standard time is listed, so confirm yours with the operator.

Is lunch included?

Yes. Viator lists a picnic lunch, bottled water and snacks; the GetYourGuide listing of the same trip describes lunch as fresh local wraps from a café in Honomū, near ʻAkaka Falls. Dinner is not included, so plan your evening meal back in Kona.

Can we bring a baby or young children?

Yes. Children from 0 to 12 have their own rate, specialized infant seats are available, and the listing says infants and small children can ride in a stroller. With 6 or fewer guests and an 8–9 hour day, it is one of the more manageable volcano days for families with small children.

Will we see lava on the Volcano Van tour?

It depends on the eruption and the weather. As of 23 October 2026 USGS reported the summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, and pauses can last days to weeks. No tour can guarantee lava or glow. Check the USGS Kīlauea page shortly before your date.
