Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Experience from the Big Island

About This Experience
Hawaii Island Experiences’ Volcanoes National Park Experience is the lowest-priced tour we review, from $139 per adult and $129 per child aged 3 to 11, and it gives you about 2 hours inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. It suits budget-minded travelers, families with young children and anyone who wants the guided drive and park admission without paying for included meals. On Viator it is rated 4.7 from 251 reviews.
Pickup is from your hotel at one of 32 listed Kona and Kohala Coast locations, and arriving flyers can meet at the lot behind Alaska baggage claim B-2 at Kona airport. The listing gives no pickup time, so confirm it with the operator. The route runs south on Highway 11 with four stops of about 30 minutes each: Greenwell Farms, a coffee farm founded in 1850; Manuka State Wayside Park on the slopes of Mauna Loa; Punaluʻu Bake Shop in Nāʻālehu for lunch, which you pay for yourself; and a black sand beach stop for a chance to see green sea turtles. Viator maps that beach to Punaluʻu, and the county beach park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so expect a change there.
The park visit lasts about 2 hours, and the description names Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube). The itinerary says the visit starts at the visitor center, but the Kīlauea Visitor Center has been closed for renovation since February 2025, with a temporary Welcome Center at Kilauea Military Camp. After the park the itinerary lists the Mauna Kea Access Road, the Kohala Coast and Hilo, with no time given for any of them. Lava is never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026, USGS reports the summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October.
The savings come with trade-offs. Groups can reach 22, meals are extra, and 2 hours in the park is half what Hawaii Geo Tours’ geologist-led day offers (our review). If you want lunch included and a smaller group for a bit more, Kailani Tours’ Big Island Highlights caps groups at 12 (our review). Infant seats and car seats for children 4 and under are available, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure.

What to Bring

Good to Know & Caveats
- Lava and glow are never guaranteed. As of 23 October 2026, USGS reports Kīlauea's summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, with a preliminary and uncertain window of 29 October to 5 November for the next episode. Check the USGS Kīlauea page before you go.
- The operator gives about 2 hours in the park. The coffee farm, wayside park, bakery and beach stops take about 30 minutes each, and the itinerary gives no minutes for the Mauna Kea Access Road, Kohala Coast and Hilo legs.
- Viator maps the itinerary's 30-minute black sand beach stop to Punaluʻu. Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Park has been closed since 29 August 2026 after the county lease ended, so check your voucher or ask the operator what replaces it.
- The park visit is described as starting at the visitor center. The Kīlauea Visitor Center has been closed for renovation since February 2025; a temporary Welcome Center runs at Kilauea Military Camp, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
- Meals are not included. The group stops for lunch at Punaluʻu Bake Shop, so budget for food and bring cash for stands and tips.
- Groups can reach 22 guests. Infants 0 to 2 travel free, child prices cover ages 3 to 11, and car seats are available for children 4 and under.
- The listing says it suits all fitness levels, but trails and viewpoints cross uneven, rocky ground, and volcanic gas can worsen asthma and other breathing problems.
- Expect about 11 hours; Kailua-Kona is about 95 miles from the park on Highway 11. The listing gives no pickup time, so confirm it with the operator. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
Not Suitable For
- People with respiratory issues, because of volcanic gases
- People with limited mobility or who rely on wheelchairs or walkers

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the cheapest guided volcano tour from Kona?
It is the lowest-priced tour we review, from $139 per adult and $129 per child aged 3 to 11, with infants free. The price covers hotel pickup, park admission, a guide and an air-conditioned vehicle, but not meals, so add lunch at Punaluʻu Bake Shop and a tip to your budget.
How long does the tour spend in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?
About 2 hours, per the operator’s itinerary. The rest of the 11-hour day goes to four stops of about 30 minutes each on the way south and the drive, including legs the itinerary lists past the Mauna Kea Access Road, the Kohala Coast and Hilo with no times given.
Is lunch included on the Volcanoes National Park Experience?
No. Meals are at your own expense. The group stops for lunch at Punaluʻu Bake Shop in Nāʻālehu, which the operator says offers sourdough sandwiches, kalbi beef and Hawaiian plate lunches as well as baked goods. Bring cash for roadside stands and tips, since many places are cash only.
Can I join the tour straight from Kona airport?
Yes. The operator says guests flying into Kona International Airport should meet at the lot behind Alaska baggage claim B-2. Everyone else is picked up from their accommodation, with 32 Kona and Kohala Coast locations on the list. Confirm your pickup time with the operator, as the listing does not state one.
Is this volcano tour good for young children?
It is set up for families: infants 0 to 2 travel free, children 3 to 11 pay $129, and infant and car seats are available for children 4 and under. Keep in mind it is an 11-hour day, and NPS warns that volcanic gas is a particular risk for infants and children.
Does the tour go up Maunakea?
The itinerary lists the Mauna Kea Access Road after the park visit, along with the Kohala Coast and Hilo, but gives no minutes for it and does not describe a summit visit. Treat it as part of the drive, and book a dedicated Maunakea tour if the summit matters to you.
