Big Island: Volcanoes, Waterfalls, & Coffee Farm Day-Trip

About This Experience
This is the sightseeing day, not the volcano-focused one. Wasabi Tours drives the whole loop of the island in about 11 hours, and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is one stop among six: about 80 minutes in the park plus a 20-minute walk through Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) on the operator’s Viator itinerary, which GetYourGuide rounds to 1.5 hours. In return you see the Kona coffee belt, Rainbow Falls, ʻAkaka Falls and the Waipiʻo Valley lookout in a single day.
Pickups run from about 6:40 to 8:00 am at major hotels in Kona and on the Kohala Coast. The listed itinerary starts with about 40 minutes at Bay View Farm for coffee tasting, then a 50-minute picnic lunch at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach. That county park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so the lunch stop will move; check your voucher or ask the operator. The operator’s description runs the loop the other way, waterfalls first and coffee last, so the order can change.
In the park the guide takes you to the steam vents, the Halemaʻumaʻu and Kīlauea Iki lookouts and a short stretch of the crater rim trail, then into the lava tube. Lava is never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026 the summit eruption was paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, and cloud can hide the crater. Check the USGS Kīlauea page before you go.
North of Hilo come 20 minutes at Rainbow Falls, 30 at ʻAkaka Falls, where part of the trail was closed by fallen trees as of 23 October 2026, and 20 at the Waipiʻo Valley lookout before the drive back through ranch country. Expect a lot of van time; one reviewer says so plainly while praising the guide.
The same trip sells on Viator as Big Island in a Day for $287 (4.9 from 7,150 reviews, the most-reviewed volcano listing in our data); on GetYourGuide it is $276 (4.9 from 490). If you came mainly for Kīlauea, the Hawaii Geo Tours day in our review gives about 4 hours in the park, and our guide to circle-island tours from Kona compares the loop options.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the stop in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?
About 80 minutes in the park plus about 20 minutes in Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), according to the operator’s Viator itinerary for the same trip; the GetYourGuide listing rounds the park stop to 1.5 hours. That covers the steam vents, the Halemaʻumaʻu and Kīlauea Iki lookouts and a short crater rim walk.
Which waterfalls and viewpoints does it visit?
Rainbow Falls in Hilo (about 20 minutes), ʻAkaka Falls north of Hilo (about 30 minutes, with a short rainforest walk to the 442-foot falls) and the Waipiʻo Valley lookout (about 20 minutes). Part of the ʻAkaka Falls trail was closed by fallen trees as of 23 October 2026.
Is lunch included now that Punaluʻu is closed?
Yes, a picnic-style lunch with snacks and drinks is included. The listing places it at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, but that county park has been closed since 29 August 2026, so lunch will be served at another stop. Check your voucher or ask Wasabi Tours where it now happens.
Is this the same tour as Wasabi's Big Island in a Day on Viator?
Yes. Wasabi Tours sells the same circle-island day on Viator as Big Island in a Day: Volcanoes Waterfalls Sightseeing and History, at $287 with 7,150 reviews, and on GetYourGuide at $276 with 490 reviews. Both rate 4.9 and offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
What time is pickup?
Wasabi Tours picks up at major hotels and resorts in Kona and on the Kohala Coast between about 6:40 and 8:00 am, and asks you to allow up to 15 minutes after your scheduled time. There are no vacation-rental pickups; you are directed to the closest hotel instead.
Can I do this as a day trip from Oʻahu?
Yes, the operator can pick up and drop off at Kona airport. Book a flight that lands by 7:20 am and a return after 8:45 pm (the GetYourGuide listing; the Viator listing says after 8:30 pm). Build in a margin, since the day runs about 11 hours on island roads.
