Waikoloa and Kohala
Seeing Kīlauea From the Kohala Coast
Who picks up at the resorts, how early, and how much further you travel than from Kona.
Most of the full-day volcano tours on this site also collect at Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and the other Kohala Coast resorts, but your day starts earlier and covers more miles. Hawaii Geo Tours, for example, picks up in Waikoloa from 6:50 a.m., about an hour before its first Kona pickup at 7:45. The reason is distance: from Waikoloa the park is about 120 miles via Kona and Highway 11, or about 93 miles over Saddle Road and through Hilo, against 95 from Kailua-Kona.
How much further it is from the Kohala Coast
Kona lies between the Kohala resorts and the park on the southern route, so you drive the Kona leg first. Saddle Road cuts across the middle of the island to Hilo, which is why it becomes the shorter way from Waikoloa.
| Starting point | Via Kona and Highway 11 | Via Saddle Road and Hilo |
|---|---|---|
| Kailua-Kona | 95 miles, 2 to 2.5 hours | About 103 miles, about 2 hours 8 minutes |
| Waikoloa Beach Resort (Hilton, Marriott, Kings’ Land) | About 120 miles, about 2 hours 45 minutes | About 93 miles, 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Mauna Lani | About 125 miles, about 3 hours | About 95 miles, 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 minutes |
The Kohala figures are our estimates built from published legs (Waikoloa to Kona is 25.7 miles; Hilo to the park is 30), so treat them as about 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Our Kona to Volcanoes National Park page covers the routes, fuel and fees in detail.
The Waikoloa listing of the Hawaii Geo Tours day
Hawaii Geo Tours sells one geologist-led day under two listings. Volcano National Park Adventure from Waikoloa is for Kohala Coast guests, and the operator asks Kona guests to book the Kona listing instead. Same price, $259 per person, same 11 hours, the same 240 minutes in the park by the operator’s itinerary, and the same minimum age of six. The Waikoloa version is rated 4.9 from 230 Viator reviews.
Its listed pickups start at Paniolo Greens in Waikoloa Village at 6:50 a.m., then the Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani and the Mauna Lani Shops at 6:55, Kings’ Land and Kohala Suites at 7:05, and Waikoloa Colony Villas at 7:15. Guests at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and the Westin Hapuna are asked to use Queens’ MarketPlace, and vacation-rental guests should call the operator. The pickup list also covers Hilton Waikoloa Village, Waikoloa Beach Marriott, the Four Seasons Hualalai and Kona Village.
The day includes lunch at the rim, snacks, water, and coats, raincoats and umbrellas for the cooler summit, and heads home over Saddle Road. For the stops in detail, read our review of the Kona listing, which is the same tour.

| Hawaii Island Experiences | Kohala hotels including Hilton Waikoloa Village and Westin Hapuna | Not stated | About 120 minutes | $139 per person |
The Wasabi twilight tour is the one to look at if an early start is the problem: its pickups run from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and it stays in the park into twilight before stargazing. Ohana Tours shows the usual gap clearly, collecting Waikoloa hotels at 7:00 to 7:15 a.m. and Kona hotels at 8:00 to 8:15. For a fully private day, Hawaii Geo Tours’ private VIP tour collects wherever you stay on the island; see our private volcano tours page.
The helicopter from Waikoloa
The Kohala Coast has its own way to see the volcano side of the island. Blue Hawaiian’s Big Island Spectacular leaves the Waikoloa heliport, not Kona airport, at 8:00 or 10:30 a.m., with check-in an hour before for the weight check. It costs from $883 per person, lasts about two hours, and is rated 4.8 from 134 reviews. Its route covers the Kohala valleys, the Hāmākua Coast and ʻAkaka Falls along with the volcano area, and a landing version stops at Laupāhoehoe Nui on the Kohala Coast for $1,150.
Under the park’s Air Tour Management Plan, air tours fly only three routes, all of which avoid the Kīlauea summit where the current eruption is, so ask Blue Hawaiian what the route covers on your date. Our Big Island Spectacular review and volcano helicopter tours page go into the flight.
Planning a Kohala Coast volcano day
Expect 9 to 13 hours door to door on a full-day tour, with pickups around 7 a.m. on most of them, and dress for a summit at about 4,000 ft that can be 12 to 15 degrees cooler than the resort. Lava is never guaranteed: as of 23 October 2026 the summit eruption was paused after Episode 55 on 17 October (USGS Kīlauea updates). If you are deciding where on the island to base yourself, our guide to Kona vs Hilo volcano tours compares the two sides.
When your dates are set, check availability for the Waikoloa departure.

Volcano Tours From Waikoloa: Questions
Distance, pickup times and how the Kohala Coast day compares with Kona.
By our estimate from published road legs, about 93 miles over Saddle Road and through Hilo, or about 120 miles south through Kona on Highway 11. Waikoloa is 25.7 miles north of Kona, so the Kona route adds that leg to the park service's 95 miles from Kona. From Waikoloa, Saddle Road is the shorter way. Kona to the park.
Allow about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes over Saddle Road and through Hilo, or about 2 hours 45 minutes via Kona and Highway 11, without stops. From Mauna Lani the times are similar or a little longer, so plan on 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Saddle Road has long stretches with no services, and its weather changes fast.
Hilton Waikoloa Village sits in the Waikoloa Beach Resort, so the same estimates apply: about 93 miles over Saddle Road and Hilo, or about 120 miles via Kona and Highway 11. Several tours collect from the Hilton itself, including Hawaii Geo Tours' Waikoloa listing, the Wasabi twilight tour and the budget Hawaii Island Experiences day.
For Hawaii Geo Tours, yes: one geologist-led day sold as two listings, both $259 per person, both 11 hours with about four hours in the park. The Waikoloa listing simply collects Kohala Coast resorts first, from 6:50 a.m., against 7:45 a.m. for the first Kona pickup. Other operators use one listing for both coasts. Our review of the day.
Usually around 7 a.m. Hawaii Geo Tours starts at 6:50 a.m. in Waikoloa Village and reaches Waikoloa Colony Villas at 7:15. Kailani Tours meets at Starbucks in Queens' MarketPlace at 7:00 a.m., and Ohana Tours collects Waikoloa hotels at 7:00 to 7:15. The Wasabi twilight tour is the late one, with Kona and Kohala pickups between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.
Many do. Hawaii Geo Tours' Waikoloa listing collects from the Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani, Kings' Land, Hilton Waikoloa Village and Waikoloa Beach Marriott, among others. Wasabi, The Volcano Van and Hawaii Island Experiences also list Kohala resorts. Kailani Tours and Ohana Tours use central meeting points at Queens' MarketPlace instead, and some Kona-only tours do not come north.
No, but it is a long day. A guided tour from the Kohala Coast runs about 9 to 13 hours with pickups around 7 a.m., and the drive alone is about 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Booking a tour means you are not the one driving back across Saddle Road after dark. A helicopter from the Waikoloa heliport is the short option. Volcano helicopter tours.
Yes, typically by about an hour. Hawaii Geo Tours collects in Waikoloa from 6:50 a.m. and in Kona from 7:45 a.m. Ohana Tours collects Waikoloa hotels at 7:00 to 7:15 and Kona hotels at 8:00 to 8:15. If an early start is the problem, the Wasabi twilight tour picks up between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on both coasts.
Not the eruption. Kīlauea's current activity is at the summit, inside Halemaʻumaʻu crater, and is watched from overlooks on the caldera rim, roughly 93 to 120 road miles from Waikoloa. As of 23 October 2026 it was paused after Episode 55, and no tour can promise lava or glow. USGS Kīlauea updates.
It depends on the tour. Hawaii Geo Tours' Waikoloa day runs about 11 hours, the Wasabi twilight tour 12, KapohoKine's Elite Volcano Hike 13 and Ohana Tours' circle-island day about 9. Blue Hawaiian's Big Island Spectacular helicopter tour from the Waikoloa heliport lasts about two hours, with check-in an hour before departure.
