How the Park Day Runs

A central meeting point, about four hours in the park, then chocolate and a waterfall.

  1. Meet at a central point

This tour has no hotel pickup. Meeting points on the GetYourGuide listing of the same trip include Royal Kona Resort, Kona Village, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Queens' Marketplace and Foodland Farms Mauna Lani. Your pickup time differs from the start time shown online, so confirm it with the operator.

  2. About four hours in the park

A National Park certified interpretive guide shows how the 2018 collapse at Halemaʻumaʻu reshaped Kīlauea's summit. Expect walks of up to 2 miles on uneven terrain, so wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.

  3. Lunch and a lava tube

A deli-style sandwich or gluten-free salad is served in the park. The day also visits a private lava tube reached on an unpaved, bumpy road, which the operator flags for anyone prone to motion sickness.

  4. Cacao farm and waterfall

About an hour at a 1,000-acre chocolate and tropical fruit farm, from tree to bar, beside the farm's waterfall. Then the drive back to your meeting point, about 11.5 hours after the start.

Park time

Ranked by Minutes Inside the Park

The operator-stated park time for every Kona tour we review, and what fills it.

If your main goal is time inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, two daytime tours from Kona lead at about four hours each by their operators’ itineraries: Hawaii Forest & Trail’s Volcano, Chocolate and Waterfalls and Hawaii Geo Tours’ Volcano National Park Adventure. Several of the best-known day trips give the park 80 to 90 minutes, because the rest of the day goes to coffee farms, beaches and waterfalls. With roughly two hours of driving each way, the minutes at the volcano are what separate one tour from the next.

Park time, tour by tour

The figures below are each operator’s own itinerary minutes for the park leg, not our estimates. Where a listing does not break out the park, the table says so.

What four hours buys

The two four-hour daytime tours spend it differently. Hawaii Forest & Trail keeps the whole morning and early afternoon in the park with a National Park certified interpretive guide, walks of up to 2 miles on uneven ground, a lava tube and a picnic lunch. One reviewer described lunch out on the smooth pāhoehoe lava and a stop at a pit crater, and also wished for more hiking. It meets at central points and takes guests aged 8 and up, in groups of up to 12. Our review of the tour has the details.

Hawaii Geo Tours folds a sit-down lunch at The Rim in Volcano House into its four hours, then drives Chain of Craters Road from the summit to the sea. Its listing names craters, lava flow walks, petroglyphs and sea arches along that road. Pickup is at Kona hotels, and the guides lean toward geology.

KapohoKine’s Evening Volcano Explorer also lists about four hours in the park, but they run into the evening, the group can reach 30 and the listing asks for a high level of fitness. It suits travelers who want the park after dark more than a long daytime visit; our night tours page compares it with the other evening departures.

Which stops each tour makes

Most park tours use the same handful of places, and the listings show who goes where.

  • Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube): Wasabi’s twilight tour gives it 20 minutes, and the Wasabi, Kailani and Hawaii Island Experiences listings all name it. Hawaii Geo Tours lists a lava tube. NPS reopened Nāhuku in August 2026 with a new entrance bridge; it is lit from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Kīlauea Iki: the Elite Volcano Hike stops at the overlook, and the GetYourGuide Wasabi day lists the crater lookout. No tour on this site lists the full 3.3-mile Kīlauea Iki loop, which NPS times at 2 to 3 hours.
  • Steam vents: on the Wasabi twilight and circle-island days.
  • Chain of Craters Road and Hōlei Sea Arch: Hawaii Geo Tours drives the road to the coast, where the arch sits near the road’s end, about 18.8 miles from the summit. Wasabi’s twilight tour covers a portion of the road.
  • Keanakākoʻi and Mauna Ulu: KapohoKine’s evening tour hikes out to Keanakākoʻi Crater over cracks left by the 2018 eruption, then visits Mauna Ulu.

Hiking inside the park

For time on foot, the Elite Volcano Hike goes furthest: a 2-mile hike down the Halemaʻumaʻu Trail to the caldera floor, after a 90-minute guided hike on lava flows earlier in the day. The listing asks for a high level of fitness, and the day runs 13 hours. Hawaii Forest & Trail’s walks are shorter and suit moderate fitness. Our hiking tours page compares the trails.

The two-hour budget option

Hawaii Island Experiences’ Volcanoes National Park Experience gives the park about two hours for $139 per person, with groups of up to 22. That is half the park time of the leaders, at about half the price. Meals are at your own expense.

What can change the plan on the day

The park is open 24 hours, but 2026 brought closures: an ash storm in March and Hurricanes Lala and Nolo in August and September. Most areas reopened on 27 September 2026, while the Sulphur Banks Bridge and the Kīpukapuaulu Trail stayed closed. The Kīlauea Visitor Center has been closed for renovation since February 2025, and a temporary Welcome Center runs at Kilauea Military Camp from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Overlooks can close after a fountaining episode because of ash, and vehicles longer than 25 feet cannot pass Kilauea Military Camp until repairs finish. Check the NPS alerts page before you go.

Lava is never guaranteed. As of 23 October 2026, USGS reports the summit eruption paused after Episode 55 on 17 October, with a preliminary Episode 56 window of 29 October to 5 November that HVO calls uncertain. The USGS Kīlauea page carries the latest.

If park time is all you want

No tour can match a rental car for hours at the volcano, since you set the clock. Our self-drive or guided comparison weighs that against the driving, and the one-day park itinerary shows how to spend the time. For a guided day, the four-hour tours above are the strongest choices from Kona, and our ranked picks cover other kinds of traveler.

"We had a very enjoyable day with an excellent, friendly guide. I would have liked to hike more in the park, but we did see Kilauea after its recent eruption, saw a pit crater, walked through the lava tube, and had lunch out on the pahoehoe (smooth lava rock). The waterfall was just OK--it was pretty and gave us a br"
