"We had a fantastic day. David was very knowledgeable and kind. We learned a lot about the island’s history and geology. The sites were beautiful—we especially loved the sea arches and lava tube. We would highly recommend this tour!"

- Head home via Big Island Candies in Hilo and across Saddle Road

How the Nights Fit Around the Tour
One night before, the tour day itself, and an evening back in Kona.
Book a hotel on the list
The Kona listing names 18 pickups, from Kona Village in the north to Outrigger Kona at Keauhou. Staying in a vacation rental? The operator asks you to call and arrange a pickup point.
Kona, not Waikoloa
This listing is for Kona pickups only. If you are staying at a Waikoloa or Mauna Lani resort, book the same day under its Waikoloa listing, which collects from 6:50 a.m.
Lobby pickup, 7:45 to 8:15
Kailua-Kona hotels are collected from about 7:50 a.m. and Keauhou last, at 8:15. The day runs south through the coffee belt to about four hours in the park.
Back the same evening
The return crosses Saddle Road, about 11 hours after pickup. A hotel within walking distance of dinner saves you a drive after a long day in the van.

Where to Stay
Picking a Base for a Kona Volcano Tour
Pickup lists, morning times and the drive to Kīlauea, with named hotels in each area.
Stay in Kailua-Kona or Keauhou if a volcano tour is on your list, and pick a hotel whose exact name appears on your tour’s pickup list. Every hotel-pickup volcano tour on this site collects in Kailua-Kona, and the park is 95 miles away on Highway 11, the shortest run from the west side. The Waikoloa and Mauna Lani resorts on the Kohala Coast are covered by most tours too, with an earlier start and a longer drive. A night in Volcano Village, beside the park entrance, suits travelers who drive themselves. The Volcano National Park Adventure From Kona, the geologist-led day this page is built around, takes only Kona and Keauhou pickups.
Kailua-Kona and Aliʻi Drive
This is the safest base. The town’s main hotels appear on nearly every pickup list, Kailua Pier and the restaurants along Aliʻi Drive are on foot, and the airport is about 7 miles north. Hawaii Geo Tours collects here between about 7:50 and 8:10 a.m. The trade-off is that town is busier than the resorts, and the beaches are small.
Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel is beachfront beside Kailua Pier, with a pool, hot tub, spa and a 24-hour front desk, and it is on the pickup list of every Kona hotel-pickup tour on this site. One tour even sends airport arrivals here to meet the van. Royal Kona Resort sits on Aliʻi Drive with oceanfront rooms, a spa and the Don the Beachcomber restaurant. PACIFIC 19 Kona is on Palani Road, two minutes on foot from the pier, with a pool, a firepit and a 24-hour desk.
For a simpler room, Hampton Inn by Hilton Kailua-Kona Bay is on Aliʻi Drive a minute from Kona Inn Shopping Village, with parking included and check-in until 1 a.m. Some tour lists still call it Uncle Billy’s Kona Bay Hotel, and it is not on the Geo Tours Kona list, so it suits The Volcano Van or the private Geo Tours day better. See all stays in Kailua-Kona.
Keauhou
Keauhou is 5 to 7 miles south of town, already on the Highway 11 route to the park, so the van usually reaches it last: 8:15 a.m. on the Geo Tours day, and Kailani Tours uses the Keauhou Shopping Center as its 8:15 a.m. meeting point. It is quieter than Kailua-Kona, with condos and a small bay, but you will drive to most restaurants.
OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa is the big oceanfront resort at Keauhou Bay, with two hot tubs, a spa, two restaurants and a 24-hour gym. Kanaloa at Kona by OUTRIGGER has waterfront condos with kitchens and washer-dryers next to a golf course, useful for families packing a picnic for a long van day. Both are on the Geo Tours and the Twilight Volcano and Stargazing pickup lists. See all stays in Keauhou.
Waikoloa and Mauna Lani
The Kohala Coast resorts sit north of the airport, and that changes the day. The park is about 93 miles away over Saddle Road and Hilo, or about 120 to 125 miles back through Kona, so pickups come earlier. Hawaii Geo Tours sells the same day under a separate Waikoloa listing, collecting from 6:50 a.m., and guests at the Mauna Kea Hotel and Westin Hapuna must meet at Queens’ Marketplace. Most of the other tours on this site collect from the big resorts. Our Waikoloa volcano tours page has the details.
At Waikoloa Beach Resort, Hilton Waikoloa Village has eight restaurants, a pool and a spa, with ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach five minutes away on foot. Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is a five-minute walk from Queens’ Marketplace, where several tours meet. See all stays in Waikoloa.
A short drive north at Mauna Lani, Fairmont Orchid has a private beach with a snorkeling bay and five restaurants, and Mauna Lani, Auberge Collection is a beachfront resort beside the golf course. Both are 6:55 a.m. pickups on the Waikoloa listing. See all stays in Mauna Lani.
Volcano Village, for a night by the park
Kona day tours start on the west side, so book Volcano Village as a separate night if you are driving. It lets you see the park early or late without the 2 to 2.5-hour drive back to Kona. Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant is about 1.2 miles from the park, with heating in the rooms, a hot tub, a lobby fireplace and its own restaurant. Lava Lodge at Hale Kilauea is about a mile from the park on Old Volcano Road; check-in ends at 5 p.m., so arrange a late arrival ahead. It also appears on the pickup list of the Elite Volcano Hike, whose operator asks you to call about the pickup point and time. Volcano House, the historic hotel on the caldera rim, was open with a limited restaurant menu as of 24 August 2026. See all stays in Volcano Village.
The summit is about 4,000 ft up and 12 to 15 degrees cooler than the coast, and it can rain at any time of year, so pack layers. A night nearby does not promise lava or glow: as of 23 October 2026 the USGS reported Kīlauea’s summit eruption paused after Episode 55, with the next episode only loosely forecast.

The map opens on Kailua-Kona; zoom out to see Keauhou to the south and the Kohala resorts to the north.
The areas side by side
| Area | Hotel pickup | Geo Tours pickup time | Distance to the park | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kailua-Kona | ✓ Every hotel-pickup tour here | About 7:50–8:10 a.m. | 95 miles via Highway 11 | No car, first visit |
| Keauhou | ✓ Most tours | 8:15 a.m. | About 88–90 miles | Condos, a later pickup |
| Waikoloa and Mauna Lani | ✓ Most tours | 6:50–7:15 a.m. (Waikoloa listing) | About 93 to 125 miles, by route | A resort stay with one early day |
| Volcano Village | Elite Volcano Hike only | Not a stop | About a mile | Drivers, an evening in the park |
If you land late or fly out early
Kona International Airport is about 7 miles north of Kailua-Kona, and Expedia puts the town hotels about 16 to 18 minutes’ drive away. Some tours collect at the airport itself: Hawaii Geo Tours lists Keahole Airport as a stop, and the budget Volcanoes National Park Experience meets arrivals behind Alaska Airlines baggage claim B-2. Even so, a night in town before the tour is safer than a dawn flight, and a red-eye home after an 11-hour day is hard going.
Booking tips
Book the tour first, then the room. Every volcano day tour on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can lock in a date, then choose a hotel that appears on that tour’s list. Match the hotel by its exact name, since operators use older names. For a vacation rental, check the rules: Hawaii Geo Tours asks you to call, Wasabi Tours sends you to the nearest hotel, and The Volcano Van collects from rentals and B&Bs island-wide. Families should note the Geo Tours day takes ages 6 and up, while The Volcano Van takes children of any age.
For the tours themselves, compare them on the homepage table, read our review of the geologist-led day, see Kona volcano night tours for evening pickups, or weigh Kona vs Hilo as a base.
When your room is sorted, check tour dates and book.

Where to Stay in Kona: Questions
Pickup lists, the Kona or Waikoloa choice, the airport and a night near the volcano.
Pickup is set by the tour, not the hotel. Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, Royal Kona Resort and OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa appear on almost every hotel-pickup list on this site. The Hawaii Geo Tours day names 18 Kona and Keauhou stops, from Kona Village to Outrigger Kona. Check your tour's list for your hotel's exact name before you book the room. Compare the tours.
Both are covered by the main hotel-pickup tours. Kailua-Kona has more hotels on the lists and lets you walk to restaurants. Keauhou sits 5 to 7 miles south, on the Highway 11 route to the park, so it is often the last stop: Hawaii Geo Tours collects in Kailua-Kona between about 7:50 and 8:10 a.m. and at Keauhou at 8:15. Kailani Tours uses the Keauhou Shopping Center as a meeting point.
For a volcano day, Kona is closer. The park is 95 miles from Kailua-Kona on Highway 11, against about 93 to 120 miles from Waikoloa depending on the route, and Kohala pickups start earlier: Hawaii Geo Tours runs a separate Waikoloa listing with pickups from 6:50 a.m. Waikoloa has the bigger beach resorts. Most tours collect there too. Volcano tours from Waikoloa.
If the volcano is one day of a beach trip, stay on the dry west side: Kailua-Kona or Keauhou for the most tour pickups and the shortest drive, or the Waikoloa and Mauna Lani resorts for beaches, accepting an earlier start. Kona airport averages about 13 inches of rain a year; the park's headquarters averages about 104. Add a night in Volcano Village if you want more time at Kīlauea.
Match the area to your plans. Kailua-Kona suits travelers without a car, since restaurants, the pier and most tour pickups are on foot or close by. Keauhou suits condo stays with kitchens. Waikoloa Beach Resort and Mauna Lani suit a resort holiday, with pickups an hour or so earlier. Volcano Village suits a night or two near the park, not a Kona tour base.
Kailua-Kona is the easiest first base. Every hotel-pickup volcano tour on this site collects there, the airport is about 7 miles north, and you can reach dinner on foot after a long day in the van. The volcano tours from Kona run about 8 to 13 hours, so a hotel where you do not need to drive again that evening helps. Volcano tours for families.
Volcano Village, just outside the park entrance. Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant and Lava Lodge at Hale Kilauea are each about a mile from the park on Expedia. Volcano House, the historic hotel on the caldera rim inside the park, was open with a limited restaurant menu as of 24 August 2026. The summit is about 4,000 ft up and often cool and wet, so check that your room has heating.
For a guided day, stay in Kona: the tours start there and drive you the 95 miles. Stay near the volcano if you are driving yourself and want an early morning or an evening at Kīlauea without a 2 to 2.5-hour drive back. No glow is guaranteed, and as of 23 October 2026 USGS reported the summit eruption paused after Episode 55. Self-drive vs guided.
Kailua-Kona is the nearest hotel area, about 7 miles south of the airport. Expedia puts Courtyard King Kamehameha's and PACIFIC 19 Kona about 16 minutes' drive from it, and Royal Kona Resort about 18. Some tours also collect at the airport itself: Hawaii Geo Tours lists Keahole Airport as a pickup, and the budget Hawaii Island Experiences day meets behind Alaska Airlines baggage claim B-2.
For volcano trips, yes, because it is where most tours start. Kailua-Kona is on the dry west coast, with the coffee belt to the south and the park a 2 to 2.5-hour drive away on Highway 11. Hotels on the tours' pickup lists mean no driving on tour day, and Aliʻi Drive and Kailua Pier are on foot when you get back in the evening.
